Leviticus
Leviticus 5
Four Ways a Soul Falls In
1 “If a soul sins by hearing a public call to swear, and he is a witness — either he saw it or he knew of it — and does not report it, he will bear the sin. 2 Or a soul who touches anything unclean — a carcass, or something unclean torn by wild animals, or any carcass, or any of the unclean detestable creatures, or the carcass of unclean cattle — 3 or who touches the uncleanness of a person, any uncleanness of his by which a man is defiled on touching it, and it escaped him, and afterward he comes to know it — then he has done wrong. 4 Or a soul who swears, declaring with his lips that he will do harm or do good, whatever a man may declare with an oath, and it slipped out of sight, and afterward he comes to know it, and so he has sinned in one of these ways — 5 then he is to speak out openly the sin he has sinned in it, 6 and he is to bring to the Lord, for the wrong he has done, for the sin he has sinned, a female from the sheep — a ewe lamb — or a female goat from the goats, for the sin. And the priest is to make atonement for him for the sin he has sinned, and the sin will be forgiven him.
If He Cannot Afford a Sheep
7 If he cannot afford a sheep, he is to bring to the Lord, for the sin he has sinned, two turtledoves or two young pigeons — one for the sin, and one for a whole burnt offering. 8 He is to bring them to the priest, and the priest is to present the one for sin first. He is to pinch off its head at the neck without dividing the body, 9 and he is to sprinkle some of the blood of the offering for sin on the side of the altar, and drain out what is left of the blood at the base of the altar. It is an offering for sin. 10 The second he is to make a whole burnt offering, as is fitting. The priest is to make atonement for him for the sin he has sinned, and it will be forgiven him.
11 If he cannot reach even to a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, he is to bring as his gift for his sin two quarts of fine flour for the sin. He is not to pour oil on it or put frankincense on it, because it is for sin. 12 He is to bring it to the priest, and the priest is to take a full handful of it and put that memorial portion on the altar of whole burnt offerings to the Lord. It is an offering for sin. 13 The priest is to make atonement for him for the sin he has sinned in any one of these ways, and it will be forgiven him. What is left over belongs to the priest, as with the sacrifice of fine flour.”
The Offering for Wrongdoing
14 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 15 “If forgetfulness truly comes over a soul and he sins without meaning to against any of the holy things of the Lord, then for his wrongdoing he is to bring to the Lord a ram from the flock without blemish, valued in silver by weight, by the holy standard, for the wrong he has done. 16 He is to pay back what he sinned away from the holy things, and add a fifth more to it, and give it to the priest; and the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram of wrongdoing, and it will be forgiven him.
17 And the soul who sins and does one of all the commands of the Lord about things that ought not to be done, and did not know it, and so does wrong and bears the sin — 18 he is to bring to the priest a ram from the flock without blemish, valued in silver, for the wrongdoing; and the priest is to make atonement for him for the ignorance in which he acted, not knowing it, and it will be forgiven him. 19 For he has certainly done wrong before the Lord.”
