Leviticus
Leviticus 4
When the Anointed Priest Sins
1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and say: If a soul sins before the Lord without meaning to, in any of the decrees of the Lord about things that ought not to be done, and does one of them — 3 if it is the anointed chief priest who sins, so that he makes the people sin, then for the sin he has sinned he is to bring to the Lord a young bull from the herd, without blemish, for his sin. 4 He is to bring the bull to the door of the tent of witness before the Lord, and lay his hand on the head of the bull before the Lord, and kill the bull in the Lord’s presence. 5 Then the anointed priest, the one whose hands have been filled, is to take some of the blood of the bull and carry it into the tent of witness. 6 The priest is to dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord, in front of the holy veil. 7 The priest is to put some of the blood of the bull on the horns of the altar of blended incense that stands before the Lord inside the tent of witness, and he is to pour out all the blood of the bull at the base of the altar of whole burnt offerings, which is by the doors of the tent of witness.
8 He is to take off from it all the fat of the bull of the offering for sin — the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, 9 and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, on the thighs, and the lobe on the liver — he is to take it away together with the kidneys — 10 just as it is taken away from the bull of the sacrifice of well-being; and the priest is to bring it up on the altar of altar offerings. 11 But the hide of the bull, and all its flesh with the head and the legs and the belly and the dung — 12 the whole bull they are to carry outside the camp, to a clean place where the ashes are poured out, and there they are to burn it up on wood with fire. On the ash heap it is to be burned.
When the Whole Gathering Sins
13 If the whole gathering of Israel acts in ignorance without meaning to, and a matter escapes the eyes of the gathering, and they do one of all the commands of the Lord that ought not to be done, and so do wrong — 14 then when the sin they have sinned becomes known to them, the gathering is to bring a young bull from the herd, without blemish, for the sin, and bring it to the doors of the tent of witness. 15 The elders of the gathering are to lay their hands on the head of the bull before the Lord, and the bull is to be killed before the Lord. 16 The anointed priest is to carry some of the blood of the bull into the tent of witness. 17 The priest is to dip his finger in some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord, in front of the holy veil. 18 The priest is to put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of blended incense that stands before the Lord inside the tent of witness, and he is to pour out all the blood at the base of the altar of altar offerings, which is by the door of the tent of witness. 19 He is to take away all the fat from it and bring it up on the altar. 20 He is to do with this bull as he did with the bull of the offering for sin; that is how it is to be done. The priest is to make atonement for them, and the sin will be forgiven them. 21 They are to carry the whole bull outside the camp and burn it as they burned the first bull. It is the gathering’s offering for sin.
When a Ruler Sins
22 If a ruler sins and does one of all the commands of the Lord their God that ought not to be done, without meaning to, and so sins and does wrong, 23 then when the sin he has sinned becomes known to him, he is to bring as his gift a male goat from the goats, without blemish. 24 He is to lay his hand on the head of the goat, and they are to kill it in the place where the whole burnt offerings are killed before the Lord. It is an offering for sin. 25 The priest is to put some of the blood of the offering for sin on the horns of the altar of whole burnt offerings with his finger, and pour out all its blood at the base of the altar of whole burnt offerings. 26 He is to bring up all its fat on the altar, like the fat of a sacrifice of well-being. The priest is to make atonement for him for his sin, and it will be forgiven him.
When One of the People Sins
27 If a single soul of the people of the land sins without meaning to, by doing one of all the commands of the Lord that ought not to be done, and so does wrong, 28 then when the sin he has sinned becomes known to him, he is to bring a female goat from the goats, without blemish, for the sin he has sinned. 29 He is to lay his hand on the head of his offering for sin, and they are to kill the goat of the offering for sin in the place where the whole burnt offerings are killed. 30 The priest is to take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of whole burnt offerings, and he is to pour out all its blood at the base of the altar. 31 He is to take away all the fat, the way fat is taken away from a sacrifice of well-being, and the priest is to bring it up on the altar for a pleasing smell to the Lord. The priest is to make atonement for him, and it will be forgiven him.
32 If he brings a sheep as his gift for sin, he is to bring a female without blemish. 33 He is to lay his hand on the head of the offering for sin, and they are to kill it in the place where the whole burnt offerings are killed. 34 The priest is to take some of the blood of the offering for sin with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of whole burnt offering, and he is to pour out all its blood at the base of the altar of whole burnt offering. 35 He is to take away all its fat, the way the fat of a sheep is taken away from the sacrifice of well-being, and the priest is to put it on the altar, on top of the Lord’s whole burnt offering. The priest is to make atonement for him for the sin he has sinned, and it will be forgiven him.”
