Genesis

Genesis 2

1 So the heavens and the earth were finished, and the whole order of them. 2 On the sixth day God finished the works he had made, and on the seventh day he rested from all the works he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested from all the works that God had begun to do.

The Garden of Delight

4 This is the book of the origins of heaven and earth when they were made, in the day God made the heaven and the earth, 5 before any plant of the field appeared on the earth and before any grass of the field sprang up — for God had not sent rain on the earth, and there was no man to work the ground. 6 But a spring rose up out of the earth and watered the whole face of the land.

7 And God formed the man from the dust of the earth, breathed the breath of life into his face, and the man became a living soul. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he placed the man he had formed. 9 Out of the ground God also made every tree grow that is beautiful to look at and good for food — with the tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of learning the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides into four branches. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it circles the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold — 12 and the gold of that land is good; carbuncle and emerald are found there too. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it circles the whole land of Ethiopia. 14 The third river is the Tigris; it runs along facing the Assyrians. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 The Lord God took the man he had formed and settled him in the garden, to work it and to keep it. 16 And the Lord God gave Adam this command: “You may freely eat from every tree in the garden, 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat — for on the day you eat from it, you will surely die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. Let us make him a helper suited to him.” 19 So out of the ground God went on to form all the wild beasts of the field and all the birds of the sky, and he brought them to Adam to see what he would call them — and whatever Adam called each living creature, that became its name. 20 Adam gave names to all the cattle, to all the birds of the sky, and to all the wild beasts of the field. But for Adam himself no helper was found like him.

21 So God brought a deep sleep over Adam, and while he slept, God took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 The Lord God built the rib he had taken from Adam into a woman, and brought her to Adam. 23 And Adam said, “This now is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of her husband.” 24 That is why a man leaves his father and his mother and holds fast to his wife, and the two become one flesh. 25 And the two were naked, both Adam and his wife, and they felt no shame.
