Exodus 36

The Work Begins — and the People Bring Too Much

1 And Bezalel went to work, and Eliab, and every wise-minded man to whom wisdom and knowledge had been given, to understand how to do all the works of the sanctuary’s service, everything the Lord had ordered. 2 And Moses called Bezalel and Eliab and everyone who had the wisdom — those to whom God had given knowledge in the heart — and all who were freely willing to come forward to the work, to finish it. 3 And they received from Moses all the set-apart portions the children of Israel had brought for all the works of the sanctuary. And still, morning after morning, they kept receiving what people went on bringing. 4 And all the wise craftsmen doing the works of the sanctuary came, each from his own work he was doing, 5 and they said to Moses, “The people are bringing far more than enough for all the works the Lord has ordered done.” 6 So Moses gave the order, and it was proclaimed in the camp: “Let no man or woman make anything more for the firstfruits of the sanctuary.” And the people were stopped from bringing more; 7 for what they had was enough for making everything — and more was left over.

The Garments Made

8 And every wise craftsman among the workers made the holy garments that belong to Aaron the priest, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 9 And they made the shoulder-piece of gold and blue and purple and spun scarlet and fine twisted linen. 10 And the sheets of gold were cut into threads, to be woven in with the blue and the purple and the spun scarlet and the fine twisted linen — a weaver’s work. 11 They made it with shoulder-straps joined from both sides, 12 a woven work, its parts twisted into one another, of one piece with it, made the same way: of gold and blue and purple and spun scarlet and fine twisted linen, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 13 And they made the two emerald stones, clasped and set in gold, engraved and cut like the cutting of a seal with the names of the sons of Israel; 14 and he set them on the shoulders of the shoulder-piece — stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 15 And they made the oracle-piece, a woven work with embroidery, matching the work of the shoulder-piece: of gold and blue and purple and spun scarlet and fine twisted linen. 16 They made the oracle-piece square, and doubled — nine inches long and nine inches wide, doubled. 17 And there was woven into it a setting of stones in four rows. The first row of stones: carnelian, topaz, and emerald; 18 and the second row: garnet, sapphire, and jasper; 19 and the third row: jacinth, agate, and amethyst; 20 and the fourth row: chrysolite, beryl, and onyx — wrapped around with gold and bound together with gold. 21 And the stones carried the names of the sons of Israel — twelve, for their names, engraved like seals, each with its own name, for the twelve tribes. 22 And they made braided tassels on the oracle-piece, plaited work of pure gold, 23 and they made two small gold shields and two gold rings. 24 And they set the two gold rings on the two upper edges of the oracle-piece, 25 and they set the gold braids into the rings on both sides of the oracle-piece, and the two braids into the two fastenings. 26 And they set them into the two small shields, and set those on the shoulders of the shoulder-piece, facing forward at the front. 27 And they made two gold rings and set them on the two corners at the top of the oracle-piece, at the top of the back of the shoulder-piece, on the inside. 28 And they made two gold rings and set them on both shoulders of the shoulder-piece, low and at the front, at its fastening, above the shoulder-piece’s woven band. 29 And he bound the oracle-piece by its rings to the rings of the shoulder-piece, held with a cord of blue, plaited into the woven band of the shoulder-piece, so that the oracle-piece could not come loose from the shoulder-piece — as the Lord had commanded Moses. 30 And they made the robe that goes underneath the shoulder-piece, a woven work, all of blue, 31 with the opening of the robe in the middle, closely woven, a binding around the opening that cannot come undone. 32 And they made on the hem of the robe, below, pomegranates like the buds of a flowering pomegranate tree, of blue and purple and spun scarlet and fine twisted linen. 33 And they made bells of gold, and set the bells on the hem of the robe all around, between the pomegranates: 34 a gold bell and a pomegranate on the hem of the robe all around, for the work of the service — as the Lord had commanded Moses. 35 And they made the tunics of fine linen, a weaver’s work, for Aaron and his sons, 36 and the turbans of fine linen, and the head-wrap of fine linen, and the linen underclothes of fine twisted linen, 37 and their sashes of fine linen and blue and purple and spun scarlet, an embroiderer’s work — just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 38 And they made the gold plate, the set-apart mark of the sanctuary, of pure gold; 39 and he wrote on it, in letters stamped like a seal: Holiness of the Lord. 40 And they set it on a hem of blue, to lie on the turban from above — just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
