Exodus
Exodus 6
I Am the Lord
1 And the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh. Under a strong hand he will send them out; under a raised arm he will drive them out of his land.” 2 And God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, being their God — and my name, the Lord, I did not make known to them. 4 And I set up my covenant with them, to give them the land of the Canaanites, the land where they lived as strangers, in which they camped as foreigners. 5 And I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant with you. 6 Go, say to the children of Israel: I am the Lord. I will bring you out from under the power of the Egyptians. I will rescue you out of slavery. I will ransom you with a raised arm and with a great judgment. 7 And I will take you to myself as my own people, and I will be your God; and you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the power of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you into the land I swore with a raised hand to give to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and I will give it to you as your own portion. I am the Lord.” 9 Moses said this to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because they had lost heart and because the work was hard.
10 And the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Go in and speak to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, so that he sends the children of Israel out of his land.” 12 And Moses spoke before the Lord and said, “Look — the children of Israel did not listen to me. How will Pharaoh listen to me? I am no speaker.” 13 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them their orders for Pharaoh, king of Egypt, that he should send the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
The Heads of Their Families
14 These are the heads of their fathers’ households. The sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These are the clans of Reuben. 15 And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar, and Shaul the son of the Phoenician woman. These are the families of the sons of Simeon. 16 And these are the names of the sons of Levi by their clans: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. And the years of Levi’s life were a hundred and thirty-seven. 17 And these are the sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, the households of their family. 18 And the sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. And the years of Kohath’s life were a hundred and thirty years. 19 And the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the households of Levi’s families by their clans. 20 And Amram took Jochebed, the daughter of his father’s brother, as his wife, and she bore him Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister. And the years of Amram’s life were a hundred and thirty-two years. 21 And the sons of Izhar: Korah and Nepheg and Zichri. 22 And the sons of Uzziel: Elzaphan and Sithri. 23 And Aaron took Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon, as his wife, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 24 And the sons of Korah: Assir and Elkanah and Abiasaph. These are the generations of Korah. 25 And Eleazar, Aaron’s son, took one of the daughters of Putiel as his wife, and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the family of the Levites by their generations. 26 This is the Aaron and the Moses to whom God said, Bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt with their army. 27 These are the ones who spoke to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and brought the children of Israel out of Egypt — this same Aaron and Moses.
28 On the day the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 the Lord said to Moses, “I am the Lord. Speak to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, everything I say to you.” 30 And Moses said before the Lord, “Look — my voice is thin. How will Pharaoh listen to me?”
