Revelation 21

A New Heaven and a New Earth

1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth went away, and the sea is no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice out of the throne saying:

“Look, the tent of God is with people,
and he will pitch his tent with them,
and they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them.
4 And he will wipe away every tear out of their eyes,
and death will be no more;
neither will mourning nor crying nor pain be any more.
The first things went away.”

5 And the one seated on the throne said, “Look, I am making all things new.” And he says, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.” 6 And he said to me, “They have happened. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the one who thirsts I will give out of the spring of the water of life freely. 7 The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be God to him and he will be a son to me. 8 But for the cowardly and faithless and detestable and murderers and the sexually immoral and sorcerers and idol-servers and all the liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

The Holy City Measured

9 And one of the seven messengers having the seven bowls, the ones full of the seven last blows, came and spoke with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in spirit onto a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God. Her radiance was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

12 having a great and high wall, having twelve gates, and at the gates twelve messengers, and names inscribed which are of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel; 13 from the east three gates, and from the north three gates, and from the south three gates, and from the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city, having twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 And the one speaking with me had a measure, a golden reed, so that he might measure the city and its gates and its wall. 16 And the city lies four-square, and its length is as much as the breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: about fifteen hundred miles. Its length and breadth and height are equal. 17 And he measured its wall: about two hundred and sixteen feet — a man’s measure, which is a messenger’s.

18 And the structure of its wall was jasper, and the city pure gold like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every precious stone: the first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh hyacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was out of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

No Sanctuary and No Night

22 And I saw no sanctuary in it, for the Lord God, the Almighty, is its sanctuary, and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God lit it up, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 And the nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory into it. 25 And its gates will certainly not be shut by day, for night will not be there. 26 And they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 And there will certainly not enter into it anything common, or anyone doing a detestable thing and a lie, but only those written in the Lamb’s scroll of life.
