Jude 1

Contend for the Faith

1 Judas, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those called, loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: 2 may mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you.

3 Beloved, while making every effort to write to you about our common rescue, I had need to write to you urging you to contend for the faith once handed over to the holy ones. 4 For certain people slipped in — those written about long beforehand for this judgment — ungodly, changing the favor of our God into indecency and denying our only Master and Lord Jesus Christ.

What Was Judged Before

5 And I want to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that Jesus, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, the second time destroyed those who did not trust; 6 and messengers who did not keep their own rule but left their own dwelling place he has kept in eternal chains under gloom for the judgment of the great day; 7 as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, which in the same manner as these went whoring and went off after other flesh, are set out as a display of everlasting fire, undergoing the penalty.

8 In the same way, these dreamers also defile flesh, set aside lordship, and blaspheme glories. 9 But Michael the chief messenger, when he was taking issue with the Accuser and arguing about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a judgment of blasphemy, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” 10 But these blaspheme whatever they do not know; and whatever they understand by nature, like the unreasoning animals, by these they are ruined.

Woe to Them

11 Woe to them, because they went the way of Cain, and for a reward they poured themselves out in the going astray of Balaam, and they were destroyed in the contradiction of Korah. 12 These are the hidden reefs at your love feasts, feasting together with you without fear, shepherding themselves; waterless clouds carried past by winds; late-autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea foaming up their own shames; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of darkness has been kept forever.

14 And Enoch, seventh from Adam, prophesied to these also, saying,

“Look, the Lord came with his holy ten thousands
15 to execute judgment on all,
and to convict all the ungodly
of all the works of their ungodliness that they did in an ungodly way,
and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners spoke against him.”

16 These are grumblers, faultfinders, going according to their own desires; and their mouth speaks swollen words, admiring faces for the sake of advantage.

But You, Beloved

17 But you, beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, “At the last time there will be mockers, going according to their own desires for ungodly things.” 19 These are the ones who mark off a boundary — soulish, not having spirit.

20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to everlasting life. 22 And have mercy on some who waver; 23 and save some, snatching them out of fire; and have mercy on some in fear, hating even the tunic stained by the flesh.

24 Now to the one who is able to guard you from stumbling and to stand you before his glory without blemish, in gladness — 25 to the only God our rescuer, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, might and authority before all the age and now and to all the ages. Amen.
