Hebrews 10
A Shadow, Not the Image
1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come and not the image of the things themselves, with the same sacrifices, which they offer year by year without a break, can never make complete those who come forward. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered, because those who serve, cleansed once, would no longer have any conscience of sins? 3 But in them there is a reminder of sins year by year; 4 for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
A Body You Prepared for Me
5 That is why, coming into the world, he says:
8 Saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin you did not desire, nor did you take pleasure in them” — which are offered according to law — 9 then he has said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He takes away the first in order to set up the second. 10 By that will we have been made holy, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
One Sacrifice, and Then He Sat Down
11 And every priest stands day by day serving and offering the same sacrifices many times over, which can never strip away sins. 12 But this one, having offered one sacrifice for sins, sat down without a break at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from then on until his enemies are made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by one offering he has made complete without a break those who are being made holy. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying:
18 And where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
Let Us Come Forward
19 So then, brothers, having boldness for the way into the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 a fresh and living way that he dedicated for us through the veil — that is, his flesh — 21 and a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us come forward with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our body washed with clean water. 23 Let us hold fast the acknowledgment of the hope without bending, for the one who promised is faithful. 24 And let us think carefully about one another, to spur one another on to love and good works, 25 not abandoning the gathering together of ourselves, as is the habit of some, but urging one another — and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
If We Sin Willingly
26 For if we sin willingly after receiving the full knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire about to eat up those who set themselves against him. 28 Anyone who set aside the law of Moses dies without pity on the word of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse a punishment do you think he will be counted worthy of, the one who has trampled on the Son of God, and has considered common the blood of the covenant by which he was made holy, and has insulted the Spirit of favor? 30 For we know the one who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Remember the Earlier Days
32 But remember the earlier days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great contest of sufferings — 33 partly by being made a spectacle through insults and afflictions, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were treated so. 34 For you suffered along with the prisoners, and you welcomed with joy the seizing of your possessions, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession, and one that remains. 35 So do not throw away your boldness, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that, having done the will of God, you may receive back what was promised.
39 But we are not of drawing back, to ruin, but of faith, to the keeping of the soul.
