Hebrews 5

What a Chief Priest Is For

1 For every chief priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in the things toward God, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins, 2 able to deal in measure with those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself also is wrapped about with weakness, 3 and because of it he has to offer for sins, for himself as well as for the people. 4 And no one takes the honor for himself; he is called by God, just as Aaron was.

A Priest in the Order of Melchizedek

5 So Christ also did not glorify himself to become a chief priest, but the one who said to him, “You are my son. Today I have fathered you,” 6 as he also says in another place, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

7 In the days of his flesh he offered up pleas and entreaties, with strong crying and tears, to the one who was able to save him out of death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Though he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered; 9 and having been brought to completion, he became the cause of everlasting rescue to all who obey him, 10 named by God a chief priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Sluggish in Hearing

11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first elements of God’s words, and you have come to need milk, not solid food. 13 For everyone who shares in milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the complete, for those who through practice have their senses trained to tell good from bad.
