Hebrews 4

A Rest Still Left

1 Let us fear, then, while a promise of entering his rest is still left, that any one of you might seem to have fallen short of it. 2 For we have had the good news brought to us just as they did; but the word they heard did not benefit them, because they were not joined by faith to those who heard. 3 For we who have trusted are entering the rest, just as he has said, “So I swore in my anger, ‘They will never enter my rest’” — and yet the works had come to be from the founding of the world. 4 For he has said somewhere about the seventh day, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” 5 And in this place again, “They will never enter my rest.”

6 Since, then, it is still left for some to enter it, and those who first had the good news brought to them did not enter because of disobedience, 7 he again marks out a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time — as has been said before — “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward about another day. 9 So then a keeping of sabbath is left for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his own. 11 Let us then be eager to enter that rest, so that no one falls by the same example of disobedience.

The Word of God Is Living

12 For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the dividing of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no created thing is hidden from him; all things are naked and laid open to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

A Great Chief Priest

14 Since, then, we have a great chief priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold on to our acknowledgment. 15 For we do not have a chief priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been put to the test in every way as we are, apart from sin. 16 Let us then come with boldness to the throne of favor, so that we may receive mercy and find favor for help at the right time.
