Hebrews 3

Jesus and Moses

1 So then, holy brothers, sharers in a heavenly calling, consider the apostle and chief priest of our acknowledgment, Jesus, 2 who was faithful to the one who made him, as Moses also was in his house. 3 For this one has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, in the degree that the one who built a house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, and the one who built all things is God. 5 And Moses was faithful in all his house as a servant, as a testimony to the things that were going to be spoken; 6 but Christ was faithful as a son over his house — and we are his house, if we hold on to our boldness and the boast of our hope.

Today, If You Hear His Voice

7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as at the provocation,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers tested me by examination
and saw my works
10 for forty years.
Therefore I was disgusted with this generation and said,
‘They always wander in their heart;
and they did not know my ways.’
11 So I swore in my anger, ‘They will never enter my rest.’”

12 Watch out, brothers, that there will not be in any one of you an evil heart of lack of faith, in falling away from the living God; 13 but urge one another each day, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you is hardened by the deceit of sin. 14 For we have become sharers of Christ, if indeed we hold firm to the end the beginning of our confidence, 15 while it is said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as at the provocation.”

Who Failed to Enter

16 For who were the ones who heard and gave the provocation? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt through Moses? 17 And with whom was he disgusted for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who disobeyed? 19 And we see that they were not able to enter because of a lack of faith.
