Hebrews 2

Do Not Drift Away

1 Because of this we must pay much closer attention to the things we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through messengers proved firm, and every overstepping and disobedience received a just repayment, 3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a rescue — a rescue that began to be spoken through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him, 4 while God bore witness along with them by signs and wonders and various acts of power and distributions of holy spirit according to his own will?

Crowned Because of Death

5 For it was not to messengers that he made subject the inhabited world that is coming, about which we are speaking. 6 But someone testified somewhere, saying:

“What is a human being, that you remember him,
or a son of man, that you visit him?
7 You made him a little less than messengers
and crowned him with glory and honor.
8 You placed everything beneath his feet.”

For in making all things subject he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things made subject to him. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made a little less than messengers, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the favor of God he might taste death for everyone.

10 For it was fitting for him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to bring the Originator of their rescue to completion through sufferings. 11 For both the one who makes holy and those who are made holy are all from one; and for that reason he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying:

“I will announce your name to my brothers;
in the middle of the gathering I will sing a hymn to you.”

13 And again, “I will trust in him.” And again, “Look, I and the children God has given me.”

Made Like His Brothers

14 Since, then, the children have blood and flesh in common, he also in the same way shared in the same things, so that through death he might do away with the one who has the power of death — that is, the Accuser — 15 and might set free all those who by fear of death were held in slavery their whole life long. 16 For surely it is not messengers that he takes hold of; he takes hold of Abraham’s seed. 17 So he had to be made like his brothers in every way, so that he might become a merciful and faithful chief priest in the things toward God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 For in what he himself suffered when he was put to the test, he is able to help those who are being put to the test.
