2 Timothy
2 Timothy 1
Paul to Timothy, a Beloved Child
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to a promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 to Timothy, a beloved child: favor, mercy, peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I Remember Your Tears
3 I am thankful to God, whom I serve from my forebears with a clean conscience, as unceasingly I hold the remembrance of you in my pleas, night and day, 4 longing to see you — remembering your tears — so that I may be filled with joy, 5 having taken up the remembrance of the faith without hypocrisy that is in you, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that it is in you as well.
Fan the Gift into Flame
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of favor of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and love and sound sense. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but suffer hardship together with me for the good news, according to the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us with a holy calling — not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and favor, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before times everlasting, 10 and has now been made manifest through the appearing of the one who rescues us, Jesus Christ, who did away with death and brought life and imperishability to light through the good news, 11 for which I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.
12 For this reason I also suffer these things; but I am not ashamed, for I know the one I have trusted, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard my deposit until that day. 13 Hold an outline of healthy words, which you heard from me, in faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
Onesiphorus Was Not Ashamed of My Chain
15 You know this: that all those in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord give mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain; 17 but coming to be in Rome, he searched for me diligently and found me — 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day — and how much he served in Ephesus, you know better than I.
