Genesis 14

The War of the Kings

1 It happened in the days when Amraphel was king of Shinar: Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations 2 made war on Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela — that is, Zoar. 3 All these joined forces at the salt valley, which is now the Sea of Salt. 4 For twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they revolted. 5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer came, and the kings with him, and they cut down the giants in Ashteroth-karnaim, and strong nations with them, and the Ommaeans in the city of Shaveh, 6 and the Horites in the mountains of Seir, as far as the terebinth of Paran, which is in the desert. 7 Then they turned back and came to the Spring of Judgment — that is, Kadesh — and they cut down all the rulers of Amalek, and the Amorites living in Hazazon-tamar.

8 Then the king of Sodom went out, with the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela — that is, Zoar — and they drew up for battle against them in the salt valley: 9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar — four kings against the five. 10 Now the salt valley was full of tar pits. The king of Sodom fled, and the king of Gomorrah, and they fell into them; and those who were left fled to the hill country. 11 The victors took all the horses of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their provisions, and went their way. 12 They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, and his baggage, and departed — for he was living in Sodom.

13 But one of those who had escaped came and told Abram, the man from beyond the river. He was living by the oak of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aunan, who were bound by treaty with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that Lot his kinsman had been taken captive, he counted his own servants born in his house — 318 of them — and pursued the enemy as far as Dan. 15 He fell on them by night, he and his servants, and struck them down, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which lies on the left of Damascus. 16 And he brought back all the horses of Sodom, and he brought back Lot his kinsman with all his possessions, and the women, and the people.

Melchizedek Blesses Abram

17 After his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh — that was the King’s Plain. 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed Abram and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
who made heaven and earth,
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who delivered your enemies into your power.”

And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the men; take the horses for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I lift my hand to God Most High, who made heaven and earth: 23 I will take nothing that is yours — not a thread, not a sandal strap — so that you can never say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 Nothing for me — only what the young men have eaten, and a share for the men who went with me: Eshcol, Aunan, and Mamre. Let them take their share.”
