Galatians 2

Fourteen Years Later, in Jerusalem

1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me too. 2 And I went up according to a revelation; and I laid before them the good news that I proclaim among the nations — privately, though, to those who are regarded — in case somehow I was running, or had run, in vain. 3 But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised — 4 and that because of the false brothers smuggled in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might enslave us — 5 to whom we did not yield in submission even for an hour, so that the truth of the good news might remain with you.

6 But from those regarded as being something — whatever they once were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality — for to me those who are regarded added nothing; 7 but on the contrary, when they saw that I have been entrusted with the good news of the uncircumcision, just as Peter with that of the circumcision — 8 for the one who worked in Peter for an apostleship to the circumcision worked also in me for the nations — 9 and when they knew the favor given to me, James and Cephas and John, those regarded as pillars, gave the right hands of sharing to me and to Barnabas, so that we should go to the nations and they to the circumcision; 10 only that we should remember the poor — the very thing I was eager to do.

Paul Stands Against Cephas at Antioch

11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I stood against him to his face, because he had been condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James he used to eat with the nations; but when they came, he began to draw back and separate himself, fearing those of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews played the hypocrite along with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with them by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not walking straight toward the truth of the good news, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of the nations and not in the manner of the Jews, how do you compel the nations to live as Jews?”

Not Set Right out of Works of Law

15 We are Jews by nature and not sinners out of the nations, 16 but knowing that a man is not set right out of works of law except through faith of Jesus Christ, we too trusted in Christ Jesus, so that we might be set right out of faith of Christ and not out of works of law — because out of works of law no flesh will be set right. 17 But if, while seeking to be set right in Christ, we ourselves were also found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? May it never be! 18 For if I build again the very things I tore down, I show myself to be one who oversteps.

19 For through law I died to law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified together with Christ; 20 and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And what I now live in flesh, I live in faith — the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me. 21 I do not set aside the favor of God; for if righteousness is through law, then Christ died for nothing.
