1 Corinthians 11

The Bible (Septuagint)

1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians 11

1 Become imitators of me, as I also am of Christ.

The Head of Every Man

2 Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast the traditions just as I handed them on to you. 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of a woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying with something down over his head shames his head; 5 and every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered shames her head, for it is one and the same as the woman who has been shaved. 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn; but if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of a man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man; 9 and indeed man was not created because of the woman, but woman because of the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the messengers.

11 But neither is woman apart from man nor man apart from woman in the Lord; 12 for just as the woman is from the man, so also the man is through the woman — and all things are from God. 13 Judge among yourselves: is it fitting for a woman to pray to God uncovered? 14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair it is a glory to her? Because the hair has been given to her in place of a wrap. 16 But if anyone thinks he is a lover of strife — we have no such custom, nor do the gatherings of God.

When You Come Together

17 But in charging this I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For first, when you come together in a gathering, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 19 For there must also be sects among you, so that those who are approved may become plain among you.

20 So when you come together in the same place, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat; 21 for in the eating each one takes his own supper first, and one is hungry and another is drunk. 22 Do you not have houses for eating and drinking? Or do you despise the gathering of God and shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I do not praise you.

What I Received from the Lord

23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night in which he was being handed over, took bread, 24 and having given thanks he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you announce the Lord’s death until he comes.

Distinguishing the Body

27 So whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will be liable for the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person test himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup; 29 for the one who eats and drinks, not distinguishing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 This is why many among you are weak and sick, and a good number have fallen asleep.

31 But if we distinguished ourselves, we would not be judged; 32 and being judged by the Lord we are being disciplined, so that we may not be condemned along with the world. 33 So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you do not come together for judgment. The rest I will set in order whenever I come.
