1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 8
Knowledge Puffs Up
1 Now concerning what is sacrificed to idols: we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2 If anyone thinks he has come to know something, he does not yet know as he ought to know; 3 but if anyone loves God, this one is known by him.
For Us There Is One God
4 So concerning the eating of what is sacrificed to idols: we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but one. 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth — as indeed there are many gods and many lords — 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and we through him.
Watch Out for the Weak
7 But this knowledge is not in everyone. Some, being used to the idol until now, eat it as sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But food will not present us to God. For neither if we eat do we overflow, nor if we do not eat do we lack. 9 But watch out that this authority of yours does not somehow become a stone of stumbling to the weak.
10 For if someone sees you, the one who has knowledge, reclining at table in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, weak as he is, be built up to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11 For by your knowledge the weak one is destroyed — the brother for whom Christ died. 12 And sinning in this way against the brothers, and striking their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 So if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I do not make my brother stumble.
