Romans 14

The One Who Is Weak in Faith

1 Receive the one who is weak in faith, but not for passing judgment on reasonings. 2 One person trusts that he may eat anything, while the one who is weak eats garden plants. 3 The one who eats is not to treat as nothing the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has received him. 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s house servant? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will be made to stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

5 One person judges one day to be above another; another judges every day. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who minds the day minds it for the Lord. And the one who eats, eats for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat, does not eat for the Lord, and he gives thanks to God.

We Are the Lord’s

7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself; 8 for if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord. So whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For this is why Christ died and lived — so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

10 But you — why do you judge your brother? Or you also, why do you treat your brother as nothing? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God, 11 for it is written:

“As I live, says the Lord,
every knee will bend to me,
and every tongue will acknowledge God.”

12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself. 13 Let us therefore no longer judge one another; but judge this instead — not to put a stone of stumbling, or a stumbling block, before your brother.

Nothing Is Common in Itself

14 I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is common in itself; except to the one who reckons a thing to be common — to that one it is common. 15 For if your brother is grieved because of food, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not by your food destroy that one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let your good be spoken of as evil.

17 For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit; 18 for the one who serves Christ in this is well pleasing to God and approved by people. 19 So then, let us pursue the things of peace and the things of building up toward one another.

20 Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things are clean, but it is evil for the person who eats through a stone of stumbling. 21 It is good not to eat meat, or drink wine, or anything in which your brother stumbles, or is made to stumble, or is weak. 22 The faith that you have, have it to yourself before God. Blessed is the one who does not judge himself in what he approves; 23 but the one who wavers, if he eats, has been condemned, because it is not out of faith; and everything that is not out of faith is sin.
