Romans 11
Has God Pushed His People Away?
1 I say then, has God pushed his people away? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, from Abraham’s seed, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not pushed away his people, whom he knew beforehand. Or do you not know what the Scripture says in Elijah — how he pleads with God against Israel? 3 “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have dug down your altars, and I am left alone, and they are seeking my life.” 4 But what does the divine answer say to him? “I have left for myself seven thousand men, who have not bent a knee to Baal.”
5 So then in the present time also there has come to be a remnant, according to a choice of favor. 6 And if by favor, then no longer from works; otherwise favor is no longer favor. 7 What then? What Israel is looking for, it did not obtain, but the chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened, 8 as it has been written: “God gave them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes not to see and ears not to hear, until this very day.” 9 And David says:
Their Stumble, and the Nations
11 I say then, did they stumble so as to fall? May it never be! But by their transgression rescue has come to the nations, to make them jealous. 12 And if their transgression is the world’s riches, and their defeat the nations’ riches, how much more their fullness!
13 And I am speaking to you, to the nations. Inasmuch, then, as I am an apostle of the nations, I glorify my service, 14 if somehow I may make my own flesh jealous and save some of them. 15 For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what is the taking back, if not life from the dead? 16 And if the firstfruits are holy, so is the dough; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
The Wild Olive Grafted In
17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became a sharer in the root of the olive tree’s richness, 18 do not boast over the branches. But if you do boast — it is not you who carry the root, but the root you. 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 Well said. They were broken off through lack of faith, and you stand by faith. Do not think high things, but fear; 21 for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.
22 See then the kindness and the severity of God: severity on those who fell, but God’s kindness on you, if you remain in the kindness — otherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And those also, if they do not remain in their lack of faith, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut out of the olive tree that is wild by nature, and grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
This Secret
25 For I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of this secret — so that you may not be discerning in your own eyes — that a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the fullness of the nations has come in; 26 and in this way all Israel will be saved, as it has been written:
28 As regards the good news, they are enemies for your sake; but as regards the choice, they are loved for the fathers’ sake. 29 For the gifts of favor and the calling of God are not regretted. 30 For just as you once disobeyed God, but now have been shown mercy by their disobedience, 31 so these also have now disobeyed, so that by the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. 32 For God shut them all up together into disobedience, so that he might show mercy to them all.
