Acts 3

At the Beautiful Gate

1 Now Peter and John were going up into the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth, 2 and a certain man, lame from his mother’s womb, was being carried along — the man they used to put day by day at the door of the temple called Beautiful, to ask for an act of mercy from those going into the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he was asking to receive an act of mercy.

4 But Peter, looking straight at him, with John, said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have; but what I do have, this I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, walk.” 7 And taking hold of him by the right hand he raised him up; and at once his feet and his ankles were made firm, 8 and leaping up he stood and was walking, and he went in with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God.

9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and they recognized him — that this was the one who had sat for the act of mercy at the Beautiful Gate of the temple — and they were filled with amazement and astonishment at what had happened to him. 11 And while he was holding on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the colonnade called Solomon’s, utterly amazed.

Peter Speaks in the Colonnade

12 And when Peter saw it he answered the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or devoutness we had made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has given glory to his servant Jesus — whom you handed over and denied before the face of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.

14 But you denied the holy and righteous one and asked for a man who was a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Originator of life, whom God raised from the dead — of which we are witnesses. 16 And on the trust in his name — this man whom you see and know — his name has made him firm; and the trust that comes through him has given him this wholeness in front of all of you.

17 And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your rulers too; 18 but what God announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he fulfilled in this way.

19 So have a change of mind and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, 20 so that times of relief may come from the face of the Lord and he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the times of the restoration of all things, of which God spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old.

A Prophet Like Me

22 Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet from among your brothers, like me. Him you are to listen to in everything, whatever he says to you. 23 And it will be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet will be destroyed from among the people.’ 24 And all the prophets too, from Samuel and those who came after, as many as spoke, also announced these days.

25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth will be blessed.’ 26 To you first, God, having raised up his servant, sent him to bless you by turning each of you away from your wicked deeds.”
