Acts 2

The Day of Pentecost

1 And when the day of Pentecost was being fulfilled, they were all together in the same place, 2 and suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a violent wind rushing along, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting, 3 and there appeared to them tongues as of fire, dividing up, and it sat on each one of them, 4 and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them to speak out.

5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, reverent men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound came, the multitude came together and was bewildered, because each one was hearing them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were astounded and were marveling, saying, “Look, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we each hear in our own language, the one we were born in?

9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and those living in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya toward Cyrene, and the Romans staying here, 11 Jews and converts, Cretans and Arabs — we hear them speaking in our own tongues the great things of God.”

12 And they were all astounded and were at a loss, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others, jeering, were saying, “They are full of new wine.”

Peter Stands Up with the Eleven

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke out to them: “Men of Judea, and all who are living in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is the third hour of the day, 16 but this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 ‘And it will be in the last days, says God,
that I will pour out from my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and daughters will prophesy,
and your young men will see visions,
and your elders will dream dreams;
18 and even on my male and female slaves
in those days I will pour out from my Spirit,
and they will prophesy.
19 And I will give wonders in heaven above
and signs on the earth below:
blood, fire, and vapor of smoke.
20 The sun will be changed into darkness
and the moon into blood
before the great and renowned day of the Lord comes.
21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean, a man shown to you from God by acts of power and wonders and signs, which God did through him in the middle of you, as you yourselves know — 23 this man, given up by the settled purpose and foreknowledge of God, you fastened up by the hand of lawless men and killed; 24 and God raised him up, having loosed the pains of death, since it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says about him:

‘I saw the Lord before me continually.
Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced.
Even my flesh will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon my soul in Hades
or allow your holy one to see decay.
28 You made the ways of life known to me.
You will fill me with gladness in your presence.’

29 “Men, brothers, it is permitted to say to you with boldness about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us to this day. 30 So being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one from the fruit of his loins on his throne, 31 he saw it beforehand and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ: that he was neither abandoned to Hades nor did his flesh see decay. 32 This Jesus God raised up, of which we all are witnesses. 33 So, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you both see and hear. 34 For David did not go up into the heavens, but he himself says:

‘The Lord said to my lord,
“Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’

36 “Therefore let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ — this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Pierced to the Heart

37 And when they heard it they were pierced to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men, brothers, what are we to do?” 38 And Peter to them: “Have a change of mind, and let each of you be immersed on the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all those far off, as many as the Lord our God may call to himself.”

40 And with many other words he bore witness and was urging them, saying, “Be saved from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who welcomed his word were immersed, and on that day about three thousand souls were added.

They Had All Things in Common

42 And they were devoting themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the sharing, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. 43 And fear was coming on every soul, and many wonders and signs were happening through the apostles. 44 And all who trusted were together and had all things in common, 45 and they were selling their property and their goods and dividing them among all, according as anyone had need.

46 And day by day, devoting themselves with one mind in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they were sharing food in gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with the whole people. And the Lord was adding those who were being saved day by day, to the same place.
