Fishing at Tiberias

1 After these things Jesus made himself known again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias; and he made himself known in this way. 2 Simon Peter and Thomas the one called Didymus and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee and the sons of Zebedee and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter says to them, “I am going fishing.” They say to him, “We are coming with you too.” They went out and got into the boat, and on that night they caught nothing.

4 But when it was already early morning Jesus stood on the shore; the disciples did not, however, know that it is Jesus. 5 So Jesus says to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered him, “No.” 6 And he said to them, “Throw the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they threw it, and they were no longer strong enough to haul it in for the multitude of the fish. 7 So that disciple whom Jesus loved says to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So Simon Peter, hearing that it is the Lord, belted his outer garment around him — for he was naked — and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, dragging the net of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about three hundred feet off.

Breakfast on the Shore

9 So when they got out onto the land they see a charcoal fire lying there, and a fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus says to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net onto the land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus says to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to question him, “Who are you?” — knowing that it is the Lord. 13 Jesus comes and takes the bread and gives it to them, and the fish likewise. 14 This was now the third time Jesus was made known to the disciples after being raised from the dead.

Feed My Sheep

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus says to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He says to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He says to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He says to him again, a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He says to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He says to him, “Shepherd my sheep.” 17 He says to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus says to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Amen, amen, I tell you: when you were younger you belted yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you grow old you will stretch out your hands, and another will belt you and carry you where you do not want.” 19 And he said this signifying by what kind of death he would give glory to God. And having said this he says to him, “Follow me.”

20 Turning around, Peter sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following — the one who had also leaned back on his chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one handing you over?” 21 So seeing him, Peter says to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus says to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.” 23 So this word went out among the brothers, that that disciple does not die. But Jesus did not say to him that he does not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who is testifying about these things and who wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are many other things also that Jesus did, which, if they were written down one by one, I suppose that not even the world itself would have room for the books that would be written.
