John 13
Washing the Disciples’ Feet
1 Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come for him to cross over out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end. 2 And during supper, the Accuser having already put it into the heart that Judas son of Simon Iscariot should hand him over, 3 knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and is going to God, 4 he gets up from the supper and lays aside his outer clothes, and taking a linen towel he tied it around himself. 5 Then he pours water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel he had tied around himself.
6 So he comes to Simon Peter. He says to him, “Lord, are you washing my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not know now, but you will know after these things.” 8 Peter says to him, “You will never wash my feet, ever.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 Simon Peter says to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus says to him, “The one who has bathed has no need except to wash his feet, but is clean all over; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For he knew the one who was handing him over; this is why he said, “You are not all clean.”
12 So when he had washed their feet and taken his outer clothes and reclined again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me The Teacher and The Lord, and you speak well, for I am. 14 So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you an example, so that just as I did to you, you also should do. 16 Amen, amen, I tell you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor an apostle greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
One of You Will Hand Me Over
18 I am not speaking about all of you; I know the ones I chose. But so that the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘The one who eats my bread lifted up his heel against me.’ 19 From now on I tell you before it happens, so that when it happens you may trust that I am. 20 Amen, amen, I tell you, the one who receives whomever I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me.”
21 When Jesus had said these things he was troubled in the spirit, and he testified and said, “Amen, amen, I tell you that one of you will hand me over.” 22 The disciples were looking at one another, at a loss about whom he was speaking. 23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining in Jesus’ arms. 24 So Simon Peter nods to this one to ask who it might be about whom he was speaking. 25 So that one, leaning back just as he was on Jesus’ chest, says to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answers, “It is the one for whom I will dip the morsel and give it to him.” So having dipped the morsel he gives it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
27 And after the morsel, then Satan entered into him. So Jesus says to him, “What you are doing, do quickly.” 28 But none of those reclining knew why he said this to him; 29 for some were thinking, since Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So that one, having taken the morsel, went out at once. And it was night.
A New Command
31 So when he had gone out, Jesus says, “Now the Son of Man was glorified, and God was glorified in him. 32 If God was glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’ I say to you also now. 34 A new command I give you: that you love one another; just as I loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among one another.”
Peter Will Deny Him
36 Simon Peter says to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.” 37 Peter says to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answers, “You will lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I tell you, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times.”
