John 12
The Perfumed Oil at Bethany
1 So Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead. 2 So they made him a supper there, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him. 3 So Mary took about three quarters of a pound of perfumed oil, pure nard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.
4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, the one who was about to hand him over, says, 5 “Why was this perfumed oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 He said this not because the poor mattered to him, but because he was a thief, and having the money box he used to carry what was put in it. 7 So Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial; 8 for you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”
9 So the large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came not because of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests took counsel to kill Lazarus too, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and trusting in Jesus.
Into Jerusalem
12 On the next day the large crowd that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and they were crying out:
14 And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, as it is written:
16 His disciples did not know these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him. 17 So the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was testifying. 18 This is also why the crowd went to meet him: because they heard that he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look — the world has gone off after him.”
The Hour Has Come
20 Now there were some Greeks among those going up to bow down at the feast. 21 So these came to Philip, the one from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” 22 Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew comes, and Philip, and they tell Jesus. 23 And Jesus answers them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24 Amen, amen, I tell you, unless the grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 The one who loves his life loses it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for everlasting life. 26 If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
27 Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But this is why I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” So a voice came out of heaven: “I both glorified it and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd that was standing and heard it was saying that thunder had happened; others were saying, “A messenger has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not happened for my sake but for yours.
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be thrown out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to myself.” 33 But he was saying this to signify by what kind of death he was about to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We heard out of the law that the Christ remains forever; and how do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you; and the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, trust in the light, so that you may become sons of light.” Jesus said these things, and he went away and was hidden from them.
They Would Not Trust
37 But though he had done so many signs in front of them, they were not trusting in him, 38 so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said:
39 This is why they were not able to trust: because Isaiah said again,
41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory, and he spoke about him. 42 Nevertheless even many of the rulers trusted in him, but because of the Pharisees they were not acknowledging it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
44 But Jesus cried out and said, “The one who trusts in me does not trust in me but in the one who sent me, 45 and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me. 46 I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who trusts in me may not remain in the darkness. 47 And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has one who judges him: the word that I spoke, that will judge him on the last day. 49 Because I did not speak out of myself; rather, the Father who sent me, he himself has given me a command — what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his command is everlasting life. So the things I speak, just as the Father has told me, so I speak.”
