The Feast of Tents

1 And after these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for he did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews were looking to kill him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Tents, was near. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that your disciples too may watch the works you do. 4 For no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be in the open. If you do these things, reveal yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers were trusting in him.

6 So Jesus says to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled.” 9 And having said these things he remained in Galilee.

10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up — not openly, but as it were in secret. 11 So the Jews were looking for him at the feast and were saying, “Where is that man?” 12 And there was much grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, “He is good,” but others were saying, “No — he leads the crowd astray.” 13 Yet no one spoke openly about him, for fear of the Jews.

Teaching in the Temple

14 But when the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple and was teaching. 15 So the Jews were amazed, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone wants to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God or I am speaking from myself. 18 The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him — this one is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

19 Did Moses not give you the law? And none of you does the law. Why are you looking to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon. Who is looking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you are all amazed. 22 For this reason Moses has given you circumcision — not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers — and you circumcise a man on a Sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole man well on a Sabbath? 24 Do not judge by appearance, but judge the righteous judgment.”

Is This the Christ?

25 So some of those from Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man they are looking to kill? 26 And look, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers really have come to know that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man is from; and when the Christ comes, no one knows where he is from.” 28 So Jesus cried out in the temple as he taught, and said, “You both know me and know where I am from. And I have not come from myself, but the one who sent me is true, whom you do not know. 29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”

30 So they were looking to seize him, and no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 But many from the crowd trusted in him, and they were saying, “When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?” 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd grumbling these things about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent attendants to seize him.

33 So Jesus said, “For a little while longer I am with you, and I go to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me and will not find me, and where I am you cannot come.” 35 So the Jews said to one another, “Where is this man about to go, that we will not find him? Is he about to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this word he said, ‘You will look for me and will not find me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

Rivers of Living Water

37 On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying,

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
38 The one who trusts in me — as the Scripture said,
out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.”

39 Now he said this about the Spirit, which those who trusted in him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

40 So some from the crowd, when they heard these words, were saying, “This is truly the prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” But others were saying, “Surely the Christ does not come out of Galilee? 42 Did the Scripture not say that the Christ comes from the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So a division arose in the crowd because of him. 44 And some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.

45 So the attendants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and those men said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The attendants answered, “Never has a man spoken like this.” 47 So the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been led astray? 48 Has any of the rulers trusted in him, or any of the Pharisees? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law — they are accursed.”

50 Nicodemus says to them — the one who had come to him before, being one of them — 51 “Does our law judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing?” 52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet is raised up out of Galilee.”
