John 5

At the Pool

1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of the sick — blind, lame, withered. 5 And a certain man was there who had been thirty-eight years in his sickness. 6 Jesus, seeing this man lying there, and knowing that he had already been a long time, says to him, “Do you want to become well?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred; and while I am coming, another goes down ahead of me.” 8 Jesus says to him, “Get up, pick up your mat and walk.” 9 And at once the man became well, and he picked up his mat and was walking.

Now it was the Sabbath on that day. 10 So the Jews were saying to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not permitted for you to pick up the mat.” 11 But he answered them, “The one who made me well, that one said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk’?” 13 But the one who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd in the place.

14 After these things Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him, “Look, you have become well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went off and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 And for this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But he answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” 18 For this reason, then, the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath but was also calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

The Son and the Father

19 So Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Amen, amen, I tell you, the Son can do nothing from himself except what he sees the Father doing; for whatever that one does, these things the Son also does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and makes them alive, so also the Son makes alive whom he wants. 22 For neither does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judging to the Son, 23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

24 “Amen, amen, I tell you that the one who hears my word and trusts the one who sent me has everlasting life, and does not come into judgment, but has crossed over out of death into life. 25 Amen, amen, I tell you that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who have heard will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to the Son to have life in himself; 27 and he gave him authority to do judging, because he is a son of man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, because an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out — those who have done good things into a resurrection of life, and those who have practiced worthless things into a resurrection of judgment. 30 I can do nothing from myself. As I hear, I judge, and my judging is righteous, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.

Testimony About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true; 32 there is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he testifies about me is true. 33 You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34 But I do not receive the testimony from a man; but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 That one was the lamp that burns and shines, and you were willing to be glad for an hour in his light.

36 “But I have the testimony greater than John’s; for the works that the Father has given me to complete, these very works that I do, testify about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me, that one has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his form, 38 and you do not have his word remaining in you, because the one whom that one sent, him you do not trust.

39 “You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have everlasting life; and those are the ones that testify about me; 40 and you do not want to come to me so that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people, 42 but I have known you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in my Father’s name and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, that one you will receive. 44 How can you trust, receiving glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that is from the only God?

45 “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; there is one who accuses you — Moses, in whom you have hoped. 46 For if you trusted Moses, you would trust me, for that one wrote about me. 47 But if you do not trust that one’s writings, how will you trust my words?”
