John 2

1 And on the third day a wedding happened in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and Jesus also was invited to the wedding, and his disciples. 3 And when the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus says to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus says to her, “What is there between me and you, woman? My hour has not yet come.” [a] 5 His mother says to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.”

6 Now there were six stone water jars standing there for the cleansing of the Jews, holding twelve to eighteen gallons apiece. [b] 7 Jesus says to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them to the brim. 8 And he says to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the head steward.” And they took it. [c]

9 And when the head steward tasted the water that had become wine — and he did not know where it was from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew — the head steward calls the bridegroom 10 and says to him, “Every man sets out the good wine first, and when they have become drunk, the lesser. You have kept the good wine until now.” [d] 11 This, in Cana of Galilee, Jesus made the beginning of the signs, and he revealed his glory, and his disciples trusted in him. [e] † 12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he and his mother and the brothers and his disciples, and there they remained not many days.

13 And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And in the temple he found those selling cattle and sheep and doves, and the coin-dealers sitting; 15 and making a whip out of cords he drove them all out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle, and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned the tables; [g] 16 and to those selling the doves he said, “Take these things away from here. Do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” [h]

18 So the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign do you show us, that you do these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.” [i] † 20 So the Jews said, “This sanctuary was built in forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the sanctuary of his body. 22 So when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they trusted the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. [j]

23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, at the feast, many trusted in his name, watching the signs he was doing; 24 but Jesus himself was not trusting himself to them, because he knew them all, [k] 25 and because he had no need for anyone to testify about a person; for he himself knew what was in a person.
