Genesis 13

Abram and Lot Part Ways

1 Abram went up out of Egypt into the wilderness — he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him. 2 Now Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. 3 He traveled back the way he had come, into the wilderness as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had stood before, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place of the altar he had built there at the first. And there Abram called on the name of the Lord. 5 Lot, who traveled with Abram, also had sheep and oxen and tents. 6 But the land could not hold them living together — their possessions were so great that they could not stay together. 7 And quarreling broke out between the herdsmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.

8 So Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no quarrel between me and you, or between my herdsmen and your herdsmen — for we are brothers. 9 Look, isn’t the whole land there before you? Separate from me. If you go left, I will go right; if you go right, I will go left.” 10 Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the whole country around the Jordan, how all of it was well watered — this was before God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah — like the garden of God, like the land of Egypt, all the way to Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole country around the Jordan, and Lot journeyed from the east. And so they separated, each man from his brother. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled in a city of the surrounding country and pitched his tent in Sodom. 13 But the men of Sodom were evil, sinning greatly before God.

14 And God said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you now stand — northward and southward, eastward and toward the sea. 15 For all the land that you see, I will give to you and to your seed forever. 16 I will make your seed like the sand of the earth. If anyone could count the sand of the earth, then your seed could be counted. 17 Rise, and walk through the land, the length of it and the breadth of it — for to you I will give it.” 18 So Abram moved his tent, and came and settled by the oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.
