Judas Goes to the Chief Priests

1 Now the Feast of Bread Without Yeast, the one called the Passover, was drawing near, 2 and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for how they might do away with him; for they were afraid of the people.

3 And Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve; 4 and he went off and talked with the chief priests and the captains of the temple guard about how he might hand him over to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him silver. 6 And he consented, and began looking for a good moment to hand him over to them away from the crowd.

The Passover Meal

7 And the day of Bread Without Yeast came, on which the Passover had to be sacrificed; 8 and he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” 9 And they said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?” 10 And he said to them, “Look, when you have gone into the city a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he goes into, 11 and say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you: Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you a large upstairs room, furnished. Prepare it there.” 13 And they went off and found it as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

14 And when the hour came he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I tell you that I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And receiving a cup he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the produce of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And taking bread he gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body [given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And the cup in the same way after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you.”]

21 “But look, the hand of the one handing me over is with me on the table; 22 because the Son of Man goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man through whom he is handed over.” 23 And they began to argue among themselves which of them it might be who was about to do this.

24 And a rivalry also arose among them, which of them seemed to be greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who hold authority over them are called Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Rather let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one reclining at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one reclining? But I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “And you are the ones who have stayed with me through my testings; 29 and I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, look — Satan asked to have you all, to sift you like wheat; 32 but I prayed for you, that your faith would not give out. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” 33 And he said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34 And he said, “I tell you, Peter, a rooster will not crow today until you have three times disowned knowing me.”

35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out without a purse or a bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” And they said, “Nothing.” 36 And he said to them, “But now the one who has a purse must take it, and a bag likewise; and the one who has none must sell his cloak and buy a sword. 37 For I tell you that this that is written must be completed in me: ‘And he was counted with the lawless.’ For what concerns me is reaching its completion.” 38 And they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.”

The Mount of Olives

39 And going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed him. 40 And when he came to the place he said to them, “Pray that you do not come into testing.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and was praying, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; yet not my will but yours be done.”

43 And a messenger from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44 And being in anguish he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And rising from the prayer he came to the disciples and found them sleeping from grief, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you do not come into testing.”

47 While he was still speaking, look — a crowd; and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was going ahead of them, and he came near to Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you hand over the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those around him saw what was going to happen they said, “Lord, shall we strike with a sword?” 50 And a certain one of them struck the slave of the chief priest and took off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered and said, “Let it go this far.” And he touched the ear and healed him.

52 And Jesus said to those who had come out against him, chief priests and captains of the temple guard and elders, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber? 53 Day after day, when I was with you in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the authority of the darkness.”

Before the Council

54 And having seized him they led him away and brought him into the house of the chief priest. And Peter was following at a distance. 55 And when they had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a servant girl, seeing him sitting in the light and looking straight at him, said, “This man too was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know him, woman.” 58 And after a little while another saw him and said, “You too are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And about an hour later another kept insisting, saying, “Truly this man too was with him, for he is also a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And at once, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

61 And the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

63 And the men who were holding him were mocking him and beating him, 64 and they covered him up and were questioning him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is it who struck you?” 65 And they were saying many other things against him, blaspheming.

66 And when day came, the council of elders of the people gathered, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, 67 saying, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not trust me; 68 and if I ask, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “Are you, then, the Son of God?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” 71 And they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth.”
