Luke
Luke 13
Unless You Have a Change of Mind
1 Now at that very time some were there reporting to him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered and said to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were sinners beyond all the Galileans, because they have suffered these things? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you have a change of mind, you will all perish in the same way. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them — do you think that they were debtors beyond all the people living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you have a change of mind, you will all perish in just the same way.”
6 And he told this parable. “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. 7 And he said to the vineyard keeper, ‘Look, three years now I have been coming looking for fruit on this fig tree and finding none. Cut it down. Why should it also use up the ground?’ 8 But he answers and says to him, ‘Master, leave it this year too, until I dig around it and put on manure; 9 and if it bears fruit in the coming year — but if not, you will cut it down.’”
A Woman Bent Double
10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And look, a woman who had a spirit of weakness for eighteen years; and she was bent over and unable to straighten up at all. 12 And when Jesus saw her he called to her and said to her, “Woman, you have been released from your weakness,” 13 and he laid his hands on her; and at once she was made straight, and she was glorifying God.
14 But the ruler of the synagogue answered, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and was saying to the crowd, “There are six days on which one must work; so come and be healed on those, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to give it water? 16 And this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound — look, eighteen years — was it not necessary for her to be released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17 And as he said these things all who set themselves against him were put to shame, and the whole crowd was rejoicing at all the glorious things being done by him.
18 So he was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches.” 20 And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in about six gallons of flour, until the whole of it was leavened.”
The Narrow Door
22 And he was traveling through towns and villages, teaching, and making his way toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, “Lord, are those who are being saved few?” And he said to them, 24 “Struggle to go in through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will look to go in and will not be strong enough, 25 once the master of the house has got up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ And he will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate in front of you and drank, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 And he will speak, saying to you, ‘I do not know where you are from. Go away from me, all you workers of wrongdoing.’
28 “There will be the weeping and the grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown outside. 29 And they will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And look, there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.”
Jerusalem, Jerusalem
31 At that very hour some Pharisees came, saying to him, “Get out and go from here, because Herod wants to kill you.” 32 And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox: ‘Look, I am driving out demons and completing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I am brought to my completion.’ 33 But I must go on today and tomorrow and the day after, because it is not allowed for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem.
