Luke 4

Tested in the Wilderness

1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led in the Spirit in the wilderness 2 forty days, being tested by the Accuser. And he ate nothing in those days, and when they were completed he was hungry. 3 And the Accuser said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Man is not to live by bread alone.’”

5 And leading him up, he showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world in an instant of time, 6 and the Accuser said to him, “I will give you all this authority and their glory, because it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want. 7 So if you bow down before me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written: ‘You are to bow down to the Lord your God, and him only you are to serve.’”

9 And he led him into Jerusalem and set him on the wing of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; 10 for it is written: ‘He will command his messengers concerning you, to guard you,’ 11 and: ‘They will lift you on their hands so that you never strike your foot against a stone.’” 12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said: ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the Accuser had completed every test, he went away from him until an opportune time.

In the Synagogue at Nazareth

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and a report about him went out through the whole surrounding region. 15 And he was teaching in their synagogues, glorified by all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom, and stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him; and unrolling the scroll he found the place where it was written:

18 “The Lord’s Spirit is on me,
because he anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to announce release to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to announce the Lord’s acceptable year.”

20 And rolling up the scroll and giving it back to the attendant, he sat down; and the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.” 22 And all were speaking well of him and wondering at the words of favor coming out of his mouth, and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23 And he said to them, “Surely you will say to me this parable: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. Do here in your home town as much as we heard happened in Capernaum.’” 24 And he said, “Amen I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his home town. 25 But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when heaven was shut for three years and six months, when a great famine came on the whole land; 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them, but to Zarephath of Sidon, to a widow woman. 27 And there were many with leprosy in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

28 And all in the synagogue were filled with rage when they heard this, 29 and they got up and drove him outside the city, and led him as far as the brow of the hill on which their city was built, so as to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he passed through the middle of them and went on his way.

A Day in Capernaum

31 And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbaths; 32 and they were astounded at his teaching, because his word was with authority.

33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have we to do with you, Jesus the Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God.” 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silenced, and come out of him.” And the demon threw him down in the middle of them and came out of him, doing him no harm. 36 And amazement came on them all, and they were talking with one another, saying, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And a sound about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

38 And getting up, he left the synagogue and went into Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was gripped by a high fever, and they asked him about her. 39 And standing over her he rebuked the fever, and it left her; and at once she got up and was serving them.

40 Now when the sun was going down, all who had any who were ill with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, screaming and saying, “You are the Son of God!” And he rebuked them and would not let them speak, because they knew he was the Christ.

42 And when day came he went out and made his way to a deserted place; and the crowds were looking for him, and came as far as him, and were holding him back from going away from them. 43 But he said to them, “I must bring the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this I was sent.” 44 And he was proclaiming in the synagogues of Judea.
