Mark 14

Two Days Before the Passover

1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Bread Without Yeast were two days away. And the chief priests and the scribes were looking for how they might seize him by deceit and kill him; 2 for they were saying, “Not during the feast, so that there is no uproar of the people.”

3 And while he was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at the table, a woman came holding an alabaster jar of perfumed oil, pure nard, very costly. She broke the jar and poured it over his head. 4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves: “Why has this waste of the perfumed oil happened? 5 For this perfumed oil could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. 6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? She has done a good work in me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want you can do good for them; but you do not always have me. 8 What she had she did: she took it in advance to anoint my body for the burial. 9 And amen, I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

10 And Judas Iscariot, the one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests to hand him over to them. 11 And when they heard it they were glad and promised to give him silver. And he was looking for how he might hand him over at a good moment.

The Passover Meal

12 And on the first day of Bread Without Yeast, when they were sacrificing the Passover, his disciples say to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sends two of his disciples and says to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says: Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you a large upstairs room, furnished and ready. And there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples went out and came into the city and found it as he had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 And when evening came he comes with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Amen, I tell you that one of you will hand me over — one eating with me.” 19 They began to be grieved and to say to him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 But he said to them, “One of the twelve, the one dipping with me into the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written about him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is handed over. It would have been good for him if that man had not been born.”

22 And while they were eating he took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to them and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Amen, I tell you that I will no longer drink of the produce of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 And when they had sung a hymn they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus says to them, “You will all be made to stumble, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I have been raised I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to him, “Even if they are all made to stumble, yet not I.” 30 And Jesus says to him, “Amen, I tell you that you, today, this night, before a rooster crows twice, will disown me three times.” 31 But he kept saying all the more, “If I must die with you, I will never disown you.” And they were all saying the same.

Gethsemane

32 And they come to a place whose name is Gethsemane, and he says to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he takes Peter and James and John with him, and he began to be greatly distressed and troubled, 34 and he says to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Stay here and stay awake.” 35 And going forward a little he was falling on the ground, and he was praying that if it is possible the hour might pass from him, 36 and he was saying, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me; yet not what I want, but what you want.”

37 And he comes and finds them sleeping, and he says to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not strong enough to stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray, so that you do not come into testing. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same word. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were weighed down, and they did not know what to answer him. 41 And he comes the third time and says to them, “Sleep on now and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come; look, the Son of Man is handed over into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us go. Look, the one handing me over has come near.”

43 And at once, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrives, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the one handing him over had given them a signal, saying, “The one I kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away safely.” 45 And when he came, going straight to him he says, “Rabbi,” and kissed him warmly. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those standing by drew his sword and struck the slave of the chief priest and took off his ear. 48 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Did you come out with swords and clubs to take me, as against a robber? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But so that the Scriptures may be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left him and fled.

51 And a certain young man was following along with him, wearing a linen cloth over his bare body, and they seize him; 52 but he left the linen cloth behind and fled naked.

Before the Council

53 And they led Jesus away to the chief priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes come together. 54 And Peter followed him at a distance, right inside, into the courtyard of the chief priest; and he was sitting with the attendants and warming himself at the light.

55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, and they were not finding any; 56 for many were testifying falsely against him, and the testimonies were not the same. 57 And some stood up and were testifying falsely against him, saying, 58 “We heard him saying, ‘I will destroy this sanctuary made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands.’” 59 And not even so was their testimony the same. 60 And the chief priest stood up in the middle and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do you answer nothing? What is it these men testify against you?” 61 But he was silent and answered nothing. Again the chief priest was questioning him, and he says to him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

63 And the chief priest tore his tunics and says, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You heard the blasphemy. How does it appear to you?” And they all condemned him as deserving death. 65 And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him with their fists and to say to him, “Prophesy!” And the attendants received him with slaps.

66 And while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the chief priest comes, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself she looked at him and says, “You too were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out into the forecourt, and a rooster crowed. 69 And the servant girl, seeing him, began again to say to those standing by, “This man is one of them.” 70 But he denied it again. And after a little while those standing by were again saying to Peter, “Truly you are one of them, for you are also a Galilean, and your speech is like theirs.” 71 But he began to call down curses and to swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about.” 72 And at once a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered the word, how Jesus had said to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
