Matthew

Matthew 16

A Sign from Heaven

1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 But he answered and said to them, “When evening comes you say, ‘Fair weather, for the sky is red’; 3 and in the morning, ‘Storm today, for the sky is red and gloomy.’ You know how to judge the face of the sky, but the signs of the times you cannot. 4 An evil and adulterous generation looks for a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” And he left them and went away.

The Leaven of the Pharisees

5 And when the disciples came to the other side, they had forgotten to take loaves. 6 And Jesus said to them, “Look out, and watch out for the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 But they were reasoning among themselves, saying, “We did not take loaves.” 8 But Jesus knew it and said, “Why are you reasoning among yourselves, you of little faith, that you have no loaves? 9 Do you still not see, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 10 Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many hampers you took up? 11 How is it you do not see that I was not speaking to you about loaves? But watch out for the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he had not said to watch out for the leaven of loaves, but for the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Who Do You Say I Am?

13 When Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi he was asking his disciples, saying, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Immerser, others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He says to them, “But you — who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in the heavens. 18 And I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my gathering, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens, and whatever you bind on the earth will be bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose on the earth will be loosed in the heavens.” 20 Then he ordered the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Take Up the Cross

21 From then on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go away to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Mercy on you, Lord! This will never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to me, because you are not minding the things of God but the things of men.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will a man be benefited if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his messengers, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Amen, I tell you, there are some of those standing here who will never taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
