Matthew 8

1 And when he had come down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. 2 And look, a man who had leprosy came and bowed down to him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.” [a] 3 And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And at once his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus says to him, “See that you tell no one, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses ordered, as a testimony to them.” [b] †

5 And when he had gone into Capernaum, a commander of a hundred came to him, appealing to him [c] 6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying in the house paralyzed, terribly tormented.” [d] 7 And he says to him, “I will come and heal him.” [e] 8 And the commander of a hundred answered and said, “Lord, I am not fit for you to come in under my roof; but only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 And hearing this Jesus marveled, and said to those following him, “Amen I say to you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west and will recline at table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens; † 12 but the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness outside; there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the commander of a hundred, “Go; as you have trusted, let it be done for you.” And the servant was healed in that hour.

14 And Jesus came into Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying down and burning with fever; 15 and he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and served him.

16 And when evening came they brought him many who were demon-possessed; and he threw out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill; 17 so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying: [f]

18 And seeing large crowds around him, Jesus gave the order to go away to the other side. 19 And one scribe came and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus says to him, “The foxes have dens and the birds of the sky have roosts, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” [g] 21 And another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go away and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus says to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

23 And when he got into a boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And look, a great shaking came on the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves; but he was sleeping. 25 And they came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save — we are perishing!” [h] 26 And he says to them, “Why are you cowardly, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”

28 And when he came to the other side, into the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs — so violent that no one was strong enough to pass by along that road. [i] 29 And look, they cried out, saying, “What is there between us and you, Son of God? Have you come here before the time to torment us?” [j] 30 Now far off from them there was a herd of many pigs feeding. 31 And the demons appealed to him, saying, “If you throw us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” And they came out and went off into the pigs; and look, the whole herd rushed down the cliff into the sea and died in the waters. 33 And those feeding them fled, and went away into the city and reported everything, and what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And look, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him they urged him to move away from their borders.
