Nahum 1
A Message About Nineveh
1 A message about Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The Lord Comes in Judgment
2 God is jealous, and the Lord takes vengeance.
The Lord takes vengeance with wrath;
the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
and removes his enemies.
3 The Lord is patient, and his power is great,
but the Lord will certainly not leave the guilty unpunished.
His way is in completion and upheaval,
and the clouds are dust beneath his feet.
4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up;
he makes all the rivers desolate.
Bashan and Carmel are brought low,
and Lebanon’s blossoms wither.
5 The mountains shake before him,
and the hills quake.
The whole earth draws back before him,
with everyone who lives in it.
6 Who can stand before his anger?
Who can withstand his furious wrath?
His wrath melts rulers,
and rocks are shattered by him.
7 The Lord is good to those who wait for him
on the day of trouble,
and he knows those who revere him.
8 But with an overwhelming flood
he will bring those who rise against him to a complete end,
and darkness will pursue his enemies.
Nineveh’s Plot Will Fail
9 What are you plotting against the Lord?
He will make a complete end.
He will not take vengeance twice
for the same trouble.
10 For they will be laid waste down to their foundations,
consumed like a tangled vine,
like straw completely dried out.
11 From you will come one who plots against the Lord, planning hostile evil.
12 This is what the Lord, who rules over many waters, says:
“Even so they will be divided,
and no report of you will be heard again.
13 Now I will break his rod from you
and tear your chains apart.
14 The Lord will command this concerning you:
‘Your name will never be sown again.
I will completely destroy the carved and cast images
from the house of your god.
I will make your grave,
because they are swift.’”
