Obadiah

Obadiah 1

Edom’s Pride Brought Down

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord God says to Edom: “I have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent a message among the nations: ‘Rise up! Let us rise against her for war!’”
“Look, I have made you small among the nations; you are greatly dishonored.
The pride of your heart has lifted you up. You live in holes among the rocks and raise your home high, saying in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’
Even if you rise as high as an eagle, even if you set your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there,” says the Lord.
“If thieves came to you, or robbers in the night, how you would be cast aside! Would they not steal only enough for themselves? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings?
How Esau has been searched! How his hidden treasures have been uncovered!
All your allies have driven you to your borders. Your friends have opposed and overpowered you. They have set a trap beneath you, and there is no understanding among them.
“On that day,” says the Lord, “I will destroy the wise from Edom and understanding from Mount Esau.
Your warriors from Teman will be terrified, so that everyone on Mount Esau will be cut off
because of the slaughter and ungodliness against your brother Jacob. Shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.

Violence Against Jacob

From the day you stood against him, when foreigners captured his army, strangers entered his gates, and they cast lots for Jerusalem, you too were like one of them.
You should not look on your brother’s day, the day of strangers. You should not rejoice over the people of Judah on the day they are destroyed, or boast on the day of their trouble.
You should not enter the people’s gates on the day of their suffering. You too should not look on their gathering on the day they are ruined, or join the attack on their army on the day they perish.
You should not stand where their roads divide to destroy those who escape, or trap their fugitives on the day of trouble.

The Day of the Lord

For the day of the Lord is near for all the nations. As you have done, so it will be done to you; what you deserve will return on your own head.
For just as you drank on my holy mountain, all the nations will drink wine. They will drink and descend, and it will be as though they had never existed.
But on Mount Zion there will be rescue, and it will be holy. The house of Jacob will take possession of those who took possession of them.
The house of Jacob will be a fire, the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau straw. They will burn among them and consume them, and no one who bears grain will remain in the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken.
Those in the Negev will possess Mount Esau, and those in the Shephelah will possess the Philistines. They will possess Mount Ephraim, the plain of Samaria, Benjamin, and Gilead.
This is the beginning of the exile: for the people of Israel, the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath; and for the exiles from Jerusalem, as far as Ephrath. They will possess the cities of the Negev.
Those who have been saved will go up from Mount Zion to take vengeance on Mount Esau, and the kingdom will belong to the Lord.
