Amos
Amos 6
Woe to Those at Ease
1 Woe to those who dismiss Zion
and trust in the mountain of Samaria!
They harvested the rulers of nations
and went in themselves—house of Israel.
2 All of you, cross over and see.
Go from there to Great Hamath,
then go down to Gath of the Philistines,
the strongest of all these kingdoms.
Are their borders larger than yours?
3 You are approaching the evil day,
drawing near and clinging to false sabbaths.
4 You sleep on ivory beds
and indulge yourselves on your couches.
You eat young goats from the flocks
and nursing calves from the middle of the herds.
5 You clap along to the sound of instruments
and consider them lasting rather than fleeting.
6 You drink strained wine
and anoint yourselves with the finest ointments,
but you have suffered nothing over Joseph’s ruin.
7 Therefore they will now be captives
from among the foremost rulers,
and the neighing of horses will be removed from Ephraim.
8 For the Lord has sworn by himself:
“I detest all the pride of Jacob
and hate his lands.
I will remove the city
with everyone living in it.”
9 If ten men are left in one house, they will die,
and those who remain will remain.
10 Their relatives will take them
and do their utmost to carry their bones out of the house.
One will ask the head of the house,
“Is anyone still with you?”
“No one is left,”
he will answer. The other will say,
“Be quiet, so that you do not name the Lord’s name.”
11 For look, the Lord commands.
He will strike the great house into fragments
and the small house into cracks.
12 Will horses run on rocks?
Will they stay quiet around mares?
You have turned judgment into wrath
and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness.
13 You rejoice over nothing
and say, ‘Did we not gain horns by our own strength?’
14 “Look, house of Israel, I am raising a nation against you.
They will oppress you, keeping you from entering Hamath,
all the way to the stream of the west.”
