Amos 4

1 Hear this word, you heifers of Bashan on the mountain of Samaria. You oppress the poor and trample the needy, and you say to your masters, ‘Give us something to drink.’

2 The Lord swears by his holy place: “Look, days are coming on you when they will take you with weapons, and fiery destroyers will throw those with you into heated cauldrons.

3 You will be carried out naked, each in front of another, and you will be thrown onto Mount Remman,” says the Lord God.

4 “You entered Bethel and acted lawlessly. At Gilgal you multiplied your ungodliness. You brought your sacrifices in the morning and your tenths every third day.

5 They read the law outside and called for public declarations. Announce that the people of Israel loved these things,” says the Lord God.

6 “I will give you dull teeth in all your cities and a lack of bread in all your places. Yet you did not return to me,” says the Lord.

7 “I also withheld the rain from you three months before the grape harvest. I will rain on one city and not rain on another. One district will receive rain, and the district where I do not send rain will dry up.

8 People from two or three cities will gather in one city to drink water, but they will not have enough. Yet you did not return to me,” says the Lord.

9 “I struck you with scorching heat and yellow blight. You multiplied your gardens, vineyards, fig groves, and olive groves, but the caterpillar devoured them. Even then you did not return to me,” says the Lord.

10 “I sent death among you by the way of Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword while your horses were being taken captive, and in my wrath I set your camps on fire. Even then you did not return to me,” says the Lord.

11 “I overthrew you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you became like a burning stick pulled from the fire. Even then you did not return to me,” says the Lord.

12 “Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel. Because I will do this to you, prepare to call on your God, Israel.”

13 Look, I am the one who strengthens thunder and creates the wind, who announces his anointed one to humanity, who makes dawn and mist and steps on the heights of the earth. The Lord God Almighty is his name.
