Amos
Amos 2
1 This is what the Lord says:
“For three acts of ungodliness by Moab,
and for four, I will not turn away from it,
because they burned the bones of the king of Edom to dust.
2 I will send fire on Moab,
and it will consume the foundations of its cities.
Moab will die in weakness,
with shouting and the sound of a trumpet.
3 I will destroy its judge
and kill all its rulers with him,”
says the Lord.
4 This is what the Lord says:
“For three acts of ungodliness by the people of Judah,
and for four, I will not turn away from them,
because they rejected the Lord’s law
and did not keep his decrees.
The empty things they made led them astray,
the things their fathers followed.
5 I will send fire on Judah,
and it will consume the foundations of Jerusalem.”
Judgment on Israel
6 This is what the Lord says:
“For three acts of ungodliness by Israel,
and for four, I will not turn away from them,
because they sold the righteous for silver
and the poor for sandals—
7 sandals that trample the dust of the earth.
They struck the heads of the poor with their fists
and turned the humble away from their path.
A son and his father went in to the same servant girl
to treat the name of their God as common.
8 They tied their clothes with cords
and made curtains beside the altar.
They drank wine gained through extortion
in the house of their God.
9 Yet I removed the Amorite before them.
He was as tall as a cedar
and as strong as an oak.
I removed his fruit from above
and his roots from below.
10 I brought you up from the land of Egypt
and led you around in the wilderness for forty years
so that you would inherit the land of the Amorites.
11 I chose some of your sons as prophets
and some of your young men for holiness.
Is this not so, people of Israel?”
says the Lord.
12 “But you gave wine to those made holy,
and you commanded the prophets,
‘You must not prophesy.’”
13 “So look, I am rolling underneath you
as a wagon full of stalks is rolled.
14 The runner will lose his escape.
The strong will not hold on to his strength,
and the warrior will not save his life.
15 The archer will not stand firm.
The swift runner will not escape,
and the horseman will not save his life.
16 The strong will find courage in acts of power;
the naked man will pursue on that day,”
says the Lord.
