Ezekiel 47

The River from the Temple

1 He brought me to the temple entrance. I saw water flowing east from under the porch, because the temple faced east. The water ran down from the right side, south of the altar. 2 He brought me out through the north gate and led me around outside to the east-facing court gate. I saw water flowing down from the right side. 3 The man went east with a measuring line in his hand. He measured about one-third of a mile and led me through the water, which was free-flowing water. 4 He measured another third of a mile and led me through water that reached my thighs. He measured another third of a mile and led me through water that reached my waist. 5 He measured another third of a mile, but I could not cross, because the water had risen into an impassable torrent. 6 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man?” 6 Then he brought me back to the riverbank. 7 As I returned, I saw very many trees on both sides of the river. 8 He told me, 8 “This water flows into Galilee to the east, descends into Arabia, and reaches the sea at the water’s outlet. It will heal the waters.” 9 “Every living and moving creature wherever the river reaches will live. There will be very many fish, because this water will arrive there and heal the waters. Everything the river reaches will live.” 10 “Fishers will stand there from En-gedi to En-eglaim, spreading their nets. The fish will be as numerous as the fish of the Great Sea.” 11 “But the water at its outlet, at its bend, and where it overflows its banks will not be healed. Those places are given over to salt.” 12 “Every kind of fruit tree will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will produce the firstfruits of each new crop because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be food and their foliage will bring health.” 13 “This is what the Lord God says: You will inherit these borders of the land, with an added portion for the twelve tribes of the people of Israel.” 14 “Each of you will inherit an equal share of the land I raised my hand to give your ancestors. This land will fall to you as an inheritance.” 15 “These are the land’s northern borders: from the Great Sea, following the route that divides at the entrance of Hamath Seddada,” 16 “Berothah, Sebraim, and Heliam, between the borders of Damascus and Hamath, then the courtyard of Saunan above the border of Auranitis.” 17 “The border will run from the sea to the courtyard of Ainan, along the border of Damascus and the northern regions.” 18 “On the east, the Jordan forms the border between Auranitis and Damascus, then between Gilead and the land of Israel, as far as the sea east of Phoenicon. This is the eastern border.” 19 “The southern and southwestern border runs from Teman and Phoenicon to the water of Marimoth Kadesh, extending to the Great Sea. This is the southern and southwestern side.” 20 “The Great Sea forms the western border as far as the entrance of Hamath. This is the western side of Hamath.” 21 “Divide this land among the tribes of Israel.” 22 “Assign it by lot to yourselves and to the newcomers living among you who have children among you. Treat them as native-born members of the people of Israel. They will share the inheritance with you among Israel’s tribes.” 23 “The newcomers will belong to the tribe where they have settled. Give them an inheritance there, says the Lord God.”
