Ezekiel 28

Tyre’s Ruler and a Promise to Israel

The Lord’s word came to me.
“Son of man, tell the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord says: Your heart became proud, and you said, “I am a god. I live in a god’s dwelling at the heart of the sea.” Yet you are a human and not a god, even though you regarded your heart as a god’s heart.’”
“Are you wiser than Daniel? Have the wise not instructed you with their knowledge?”
“Have you gained power through your knowledge and prudence and acquired gold and silver for your treasuries?”
“Through your great knowledge and trade you multiplied your power, and your heart became proud because of that power.”
“Therefore, this is what the Lord says: Because you regarded your heart as a god’s heart,”
“look, I will bring foreigners against you, violent men from the nations. They will draw their swords against you and against the beauty of your knowledge, and they will lay your beauty low to ruin.”
“They will bring you down, and you will die the death of the slain in the heart of the sea.”
“Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’ before those who kill you? You are a human and not a god.”
“You will perish by the hands of strangers among the multitude of the uncircumcised, because I have spoken, says the Lord.”
The Lord’s word came to me.
“Son of man, raise a lament for the ruler of Tyre and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord God says: You are a seal of likeness and a crown of beauty.’”
“You were in the delight of God’s garden. Every precious stone was fastened on you: carnelian, topaz, emerald, garnet, sapphire, jasper, silver, gold, jacinth, agate, amethyst, chrysolite, beryl, and onyx. You filled your treasuries and storehouses with gold from the day you were created.”
“I placed you with the cherub on God’s holy mountain, and you were among the stones of fire.”
“You were faultless in your days from the day you were created until wrongdoing was found in you.”
“Because of your abundant merchandise, you filled your storehouses with wrongdoing and sinned. So you were thrown down wounded from God’s mountain, and the cherub removed you from among the stones of fire.”
“Your heart became proud because of your beauty, and your knowledge was corrupted along with your beauty. Because of your many sins, I threw you to the ground and exposed you to open shame before kings.”
“Because of your many sins and the wrongs in your trade, you treated your holy things as common. I will bring fire from within you, and it will consume you. I will turn you to ashes on your land before everyone who sees you.”
“Everyone among the nations who knows you will be appalled over you. You have become a ruin and will never exist again.”
The Lord’s word came to me.
“Son of man, set your face against Sidon and prophesy against it.”
“Say, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look, I am against you, Sidon. I will be glorified in you. When I execute judgments in you and am made holy in you, you will know that I am the Lord.’”
“Blood and death will fill your streets. People wounded by swords will fall within you and on every side. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
“The house of Israel will no longer have a bitter thorn or a piercing briar from any of the surrounding peoples who dishonored them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
“This is what the Lord God says: I will gather Israel from the nations where they were scattered. I will be made holy among them before the peoples and nations, and they will live on the land I gave my servant Jacob.”
“They will live on it in hope; they will build houses, plant vineyards, and live in hope, when I execute judgment on all the surrounding peoples who dishonored them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God and the God of their ancestors.”
