Ezekiel 27
A Lament for Tyre
The word of the Lord came to me.
“Son of man, take up a lament over Tyre.”
“Say to Tyre, who lives at the entrance of the sea, the marketplace of the peoples from many islands: This is what the Lord says to Tyre: You have said, ‘I have clothed myself with my beauty.’”
“In the heart of the sea your sons put beauty on you for Beelim.”
“Cedar from Senir was used to build you; strips of cypress planking were taken from Lebanon to make you masts of fir.”
“From Bashan they made your oars. They made your holy things of ivory, and your shaded cabins of wood from the islands of Kittim.”
“Fine linen with embroidery from Egypt was your bedding, to put glory on you; blue and purple from the islands of Elishah wrapped you. These became your coverings.”
“Your rulers, who lived in Sidon, and the men of Arvad were your rowers. Your wise men, Tyre, who were within you — these were your pilots.”
“The elders of Byblos and their wise men were in you; these strengthened your counsel. All the ships of the sea and their rowers were yours, out to the farthest west.”
“Persians, Lydians, and Libyans were in your army. Your warriors hung shield and helmet in you; these gave you your glory.”
“The sons of Arvad and your army were on your walls, and guards were in your towers. They hung their quivers on your battlements all around; these perfected your beauty.”
“The Carthaginians were your merchants because of your abundant strength. They supplied your market with silver, gold, iron, tin, and lead.”
“Greece, the whole of it, and the lands stretching beyond — these traded with you in the souls of men, and they gave bronze vessels for your merchandise.”
“From the house of Togarmah they supplied your market with horses and horsemen.”
“The sons of the Rhodians were your merchants; from the islands they multiplied your merchandise with ivory tusks, and to those who brought them in you gave your payment in return —”
“men as your merchandise, out of your abundant trading population. Oil of myrrh and embroidered work from Tarshish, Ramoth, and Chorchor supplied your market.”
“Judah and the people of Israel were your merchants, trading in grain for sale, perfumes, and cassia. They gave the finest honey, oil, and resin to your trading population.”
“Damascus was your merchant because of the abundance of all your power: wine from Helbon and wool from Miletus.”
“They brought wine into your market. From Asel came worked iron, and wheels are among your trading population.”
“Dedan traded with you in choice cattle for chariots.”
“Arabia and all the rulers of Kedar traded through your hand, with camels, rams, and lambs; in these they traded with you.”
“The merchants of Sheba and Raamah were your merchants, with the finest spices and precious stones, and they brought gold to your market.”
“Haran and Canneh were your merchants; Asshur and Charman were your merchants,”
“bringing as merchandise blue cloth and choice treasures bound with cords, and cypress wood.”
“Ships — in them the Carthaginians were your merchants amid your abundant trading population. You were filled and grew very heavy in the heart of the sea.”
“Your rowers brought you into deep waters, and the south wind broke you in the heart of the sea.”
“Your forces, your earnings and those of your trading population, your rowers, your pilots, your counselors, your traders from among your trading population, all the warriors in you, and all the company in your midst will fall in the heart of the sea on the day of your fall.”
“At the sound of your cry your pilots will be terrified with fear.”
“All your rowers, the deckhands, and the pilots of the sea will come down from the ships and stand on the land.”
“They will wail aloud over you and cry out bitterly; they will put earth on their heads and spread ashes beneath themselves.”
“Their sons will take up a lament over you, a dirge for you:”
“‘What great wages you found from the sea! You filled nations from your abundance, and from your trading population you enriched all the kings of the earth.’”
“‘Now you are broken in the sea, in the deep water. Your trading population and all your company among you have fallen, all your rowers.’”
“‘All who live in the islands are appalled over you; their kings are utterly astonished, and their faces are wet with tears.’”
“‘Merchants from the nations hiss at you. You have become a ruin, and you will never exist again.’”
