Hananiah Breaks Jeremiah’s Yoke
1 In the fifth month of the fourth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, Hananiah the false prophet, Azzur’s son from Gibeon, spoke to me in the Lord’s house before the priests and all the people. 2 “This is what the Lord says: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.” 3 “Within two full years I will bring back to this place the vessels of the Lord’s house,” 4 “and Jeconiah and the exiles of Judah, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.” 5 Then Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah before all the people and before the priests standing in the house of the Lord, 6 and Jeremiah said, “Truly! May the Lord do so. May he confirm the word you prophesy, and bring back the vessels of the Lord’s house and all the exiles from Babylon to this place.” 7 “Nevertheless, hear the word of the Lord that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people.” 8 “The prophets who lived before me and before you, from long ago, prophesied war against many lands and great kingdoms.” 9 “As for the prophet who prophesies peace — when his word comes to pass, they will know that he is a prophet the Lord has sent them in faithfulness.” 10 Then Hananiah, before all the people, took the yoke bars from Jeremiah’s neck and broke them to pieces. 11 And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “This is what the Lord says: In this way I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon from the necks of all the nations.” And Jeremiah went his way. 12 After Hananiah broke the yoke from Jeremiah’s neck, the Lord’s word came to Jeremiah. 13 “Go and say to Hananiah, This is what the Lord says: You have broken yokes of wood, but in their place I will make yokes of iron.” 14 “For this is what the Lord says: I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all the nations, so that they will serve the king of Babylon.” 15 Then Jeremiah said to Hananiah, “The Lord has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie.” 16 “Therefore, this is what the Lord says: Look, I will remove you from the earth. You will die this year.” 17 So he died in the seventh month.
