Jeremiah 34
The Yoke and the False Prophets
1 “This is what the Lord says: Make bonds and yokes for yourself and put them around your neck.” 3 “Send them to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon through the messengers who have come to Jerusalem to meet King Zedekiah of Judah.” 4 “Command them to say to their masters, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: This is what you are to tell your masters:” 5 “I made the earth by my great power and my uplifted arm, and I give it to whoever is pleasing in my eyes.” 6 “I have given the earth to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to serve him, and even the wild animals of the field to labor for him.” 8 “And any nation or kingdom that will not put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon — with sword and famine I will call them to account, says the Lord, until they come to an end by his hand.” 9 “Do not listen to your false prophets, diviners, dream interpreters, omen readers, or sorcerers when they say, ‘You will never serve the king of Babylon.’” 10 “They prophesy lies to you in order to remove you far from your land.” 11 “But I will leave on its own land any nation that puts its neck under the king of Babylon’s yoke and serves him. It will serve him and live there.” 12 I spoke to King Zedekiah of Judah in these same words: “Put your neck under the yoke” 14 “and serve the king of Babylon, for what they prophesy to you is wrong.” 15 “I did not send them, says the Lord. They prophesy wrongly in my name so as to destroy you — and you will perish, you and the prophets who prophesy lies to you.” 16 To you, and to all this people, and to the priests I spoke, saying, “This is what the Lord says: Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, Look, the vessels of the Lord’s house will return from Babylon. What they prophesy to you is wrong.” 17 “I did not send them.” 18 “If they are prophets, and if the Lord’s word is in them, let them come to meet me.” 19 “For this is what the Lord says about the vessels that remain,” 20 “which the king of Babylon did not take when he carried Jeconiah into exile from Jerusalem:” 22 “They will go into Babylon, says the Lord.”
