Jeremiah 30
Against Edom, Ammon, Damascus, and Kedar
Concerning Edom.
“This is what the Lord says: There is no longer wisdom in Teman, counsel has perished from the wise ones, their wisdom is gone,”
“Their place has been deceived. Dig deep to hide, you who live in Dedan, for hard things have been done; I brought them on him at the time I called him to account.”
“For grape-gatherers have come, who will not leave you survivors. Like thieves in the night, they will lay their hands on you.”
“I have stripped Esau and uncovered his hiding places, so his people cannot conceal themselves. They have perished by the hand of a brother and a neighbor, and there is no one left”
“to spare your orphan, that he might live. But I live, and widows have put their trust in me.”
“This is what the Lord says: Those who were not appointed to drink the cup have drunk it. And you — will you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you will surely drink.”
“For I have sworn by myself, says the Lord, that in her midst you will become an uninhabited wasteland, a reproach, and a curse, and all her cities will be deserted forever.”
“I have heard a report from the Lord: he has sent messengers to the nations, saying, Gather together and come against her; rise up for battle.”
“I have made you small among the nations, easily despised among men.”
“Your sport has turned against you; the insolence of your heart has lodged in the clefts of the rocks and seized the strength of the high hill. Yet though he sets his nest as high as an eagle, from there I will bring you down.”
“Edom will become an uninhabited wasteland; everyone who passes by will hiss at it.”
“As Sodom, Gomorrah, and the cities around them were overthrown, says the Lord Almighty, no one will live there and no human being will stay there.”
“Look, he will come up like a lion from the middle of the Jordan to the place of Aitham, for I will quickly drive them away from her. Set the young men against her. For who is like me? Who can resist me? What shepherd can stand before me?”
“Therefore hear the Lord’s plan against Edom and what he has devised against the people of Teman: surely the least of the flock will be swept away, and surely their dwelling place will be left an uninhabited waste because of them.”
“At the sound of their fall the earth quaked, and your cry was heard at the sea.”
“Look, like an eagle he will look down and spread his wings over her strongholds. On that day the heart of Edom’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.”
Concerning the sons of Ammon.
“This is what the Lord says: Are there no sons in Israel? Have they no one to inherit? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and why do their people live in their cities?”
“Therefore the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make the clamor of war heard against Rabbah. They will become an uninhabited waste, a place of destruction, and her altars will be burned with fire. Then Israel will take back his dominion.”
“Wail, Heshbon, for Ai has perished. Cry out, daughters of Rabbah; put on sackcloth, go wild with grief, and beat your breasts for Milcom, for he is going into exile, his priests and his rulers together.”
“Why do you exult in the plains of the Anakim, you insolent daughter, who trusts in her treasures, who says, Who will come against me?”
“Look, I will bring terror on you, says the Lord, from all the country around you. You will be scattered, each man straight ahead of him, with no one to gather you.”
Concerning Kedar, the queen of the palace, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down.
“This is what the Lord says: Rise up, go against Kedar, and fill the sons of Kedem.”
“They will take their tents and their sheep; they will take for themselves their garments, all their goods, and their camels. Call out destruction against them from every side.”
“Flee quickly! Dig deep to hide, you who sit in the palace, for the king of Babylon has made a plan against you and devised a scheme against you.”
“Rise up, go against a nation at ease, living undisturbed, with no doors, no bolts, no bars — a people who live alone.”
“Their camels will become plunder, and their many cattle will be destroyed. I will scatter to every wind those men with their shaved temples, and from every side of them I will bring their rout, says the Lord.”
“The palace will become a resting place for ostriches, an uninhabited waste forever. No one will live there, and no human being will stay there.”
Concerning Damascus.
“Hamath and Arpad have been put to shame because they heard bad news. They are dismayed and angry, and they cannot rest.”
“Damascus has gone weak; she has turned to flee, and trembling has seized her.”
“How has she not abandoned my city, the town that was loved?”
“Therefore the young men will fall in your streets, and all your warriors will fall, says the Lord.”
“I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it will devour the streets of the son of Ader.”
