Isaiah
Isaiah 64
A Prayer for Mercy
If you opened heaven, the mountains would tremble before you and melt,
like wax melting before fire. Fire would consume your enemies, your name would become known among your adversaries, and the nations would be troubled at your presence.
Whenever you act gloriously, the mountains will tremble before you.
From ancient times we have neither heard nor seen any God besides you and the works you will do for those who wait for mercy.
These blessings will come to those who practice righteousness and remember your paths. Look, you were angry, and we sinned. Therefore, we went astray.
We have all become unclean, and all our righteousness is like the cloth of a woman in her monthly period. We have fallen like leaves because of our lawless deeds, and the wind will carry us away.
No one calls on your name or remembers to take hold of you, because you turned your face from us and handed us over because of our sins.
Now, Lord, you are our Father. We are clay, and all of us are the work of your hands.
Do not be extremely angry with us, and do not remember our sins at the appointed time. Look at us now, because we are all your people.
Your holy city has become desolate. Zion has become a wilderness, and Jerusalem a curse.
Our sanctuary, the house and glory our ancestors blessed, was burned with fire. Everything that brought us glory has fallen into ruin.
After all this, Lord, you held yourself back, remained silent, and brought us very low.
