Isaiah
Isaiah 63
The Lord’s Vengeance and the People’s Prayer
“Who is this coming from Edom, with red clothing from Bozrah, beautiful in his clothing and mighty in strength?”
“I speak of righteousness and a judgment that rescues.”
“Why are your clothes red, like the clothing of someone fresh from trampling a winepress?”
“I am full of trampled grapes. No one from the nations was with me. I trampled them in my fury, crushed them like earth, and brought their blood down to the ground.
The day of repayment came on them, and the year of ransom is here.
I looked, but there was no helper. I observed, but no one supported me. So my own arm rescued them, and my anger drew near.
I trampled them in my anger and brought their blood down to the ground.”
I remembered the Lord’s mercy and the Lord’s praiseworthy deeds in everything with which he repays us. The Lord is a good judge to the house of Israel. He deals with us according to his mercy and abundant righteousness.
He said, “Are they not my people, children who will not rebel?” So he became their rescue
from every affliction. It was no ambassador or messenger, but the Lord himself who saved them, because he loved and spared them. He ransomed, took up, and lifted them throughout the ancient days.
But they disobeyed and provoked his Holy Spirit, so he turned into their enemy and fought against them himself.
The one who brought the shepherd of the sheep up from the land remembered the ancient days. Where is the one who put his Holy Spirit among them?
Where is the one whose glorious arm led Moses by the right hand, who forced the water to separate before him and made himself an everlasting name?
He led them through the deep like a horse through the wilderness, and they did not grow weary.
Like cattle through a plain, the Spirit came down from the Lord and guided them. This is how you led your people and made yourself a glorious name.
Turn from heaven and look from your holy dwelling and your glory. Where are your zeal and strength? Where are your abundant mercy and pity, which you have withheld from us?
You are our Father. Even if Abraham did not know us and Israel did not acknowledge us, you, Lord, are our Father. Rescue us. Your name has been on us from the beginning.
Lord, why did you make us stray from your path and harden our hearts so we would not revere you? Return for your servants’ sake and for the tribes of your inheritance.
so that we may inherit a small part of your holy mountain. Our adversaries trampled your sanctuary.
We have become as we were at the beginning, when you did not rule over us and your name was not called on us.
