Isaiah 53

The Suffering Servant

Lord, who believed what we reported? To whom was the Lord’s arm revealed?
We brought our report before him: he was like a child, like a root in thirsty ground. He had no form or glory. We saw him, and he had no form or beauty.
His appearance was without honor, lower than that of other people. He was a man of suffering who knew how to bear sickness. His face was turned away. He was dishonored and disregarded.
He bears our sins and suffers pain for us, yet we considered him troubled, suffering, and afflicted.
He was wounded because of our lawless deeds and made sick because of our sins. The discipline that brought us peace was on him, and by his bruises we were healed.
We all went astray like sheep. Each person wandered down his own path, and the Lord handed him over for our sins.
Because of his affliction, he does not open his mouth. He was led like a sheep to slaughter. Like a lamb silent before its shearer, he does not open his mouth.
In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away. Who will describe his generation? His life was taken from the earth. Because of my people’s lawless deeds, he was led to death.
I will give the wicked in exchange for his burial and the rich in exchange for his death, because he practiced no lawlessness and spoke no deceit.
The Lord also desires to make him clean of his wound. If you give an offering for sin, your soul will see long-lived offspring, and the Lord intends to remove
from the pain of his soul, show him light, form him with understanding, vindicate the righteous one who serves many well, and he will bear their sins.
Therefore, he will inherit many and divide the spoils of the mighty, because his soul was handed over to death. He was counted among the lawless, bore the sins of many, and was handed over because of their sins.
