Isaiah
Isaiah 34
Judgment on Edom
Nations, come near and listen; rulers, pay attention. Let the earth and everyone in it listen, the world and its people.
The Lord’s wrath is against every nation, and his anger against their whole number, to destroy them and hand them over for slaughter.
Their wounded and their dead will be thrown out, and their stench will rise; the mountains will be soaked with their blood.
The sky will be rolled up like a scroll, and every star will fall like leaves from a vine or fig tree.
My sword became drunk in heaven. Look, it will come down on Edom and bring judgment on the people marked for destruction.
The Lord’s sword is filled with blood; it is thick with the fat of lambs and the fat of goats and rams. The Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah and a great slaughter in Edom.
The mighty will fall with them, along with rams and bulls. The land will be soaked with blood and filled with fat.
It is the Lord’s day of judgment and the year of Zion’s repayment in judgment.
Its valleys will turn into pitch and its land into sulfur. Its land will burn like pitch day and night.
It will never be extinguished, and its smoke will rise. It will remain desolate through every generation and for a long time to come.
Birds, hedgehogs, ibises, and ravens will live there. A measuring line of desolation will be stretched over it, and donkey-centaurs will live there.
Its rulers will no longer exist, because its kings, its rulers, and its great men will be destroyed.
Thorns will spring up in its cities and fortresses. They will become homes for Sirens and a courtyard for ostriches.
Demons will meet donkey-centaurs, and they will call to one another. Donkey-centaurs will rest there, having found themselves a resting place.
There the hedgehog built its nest, and the earth safely guarded its young. Deer met there and saw one another face to face.
They passed by in full number, and not one died. They did not search for one another, because the Lord commanded them and his Spirit gathered them.
He will cast lots for them, and his hand assigned their pasture. You will inherit it forever; they will rest on it through every generation.
